Former East Boston and Winthrop residents Sabatino (“Benâ€) and Irene Marcucci passed away in 2012 within months of each other but their legacy remains vibrant. Thanks to a permanent fund their family created, children undergoing cancer treatments at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center will now benefit from the Marcucci’s vision and generosity.
When the Marcucci’s lost their son decades ago, they set up a trust for charitable purposes. To fulfill their wishes, their daughter, Michele Wilson, and her husband, Bob, arranged a gift to Mass General. It honors the care her parents both received at the Mass General Cancer Center.
The gift is now an endowed fund at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) named in memory of the Marcucci’s son. The Michael P. Marcucci Memorial Pediatric Cancer fund is designed to support programs and activities in MGHfC’s Center for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. It’s a fitting tribute to Michele’s brother who loved children. The Marcucci’s were also posthumously named to the MGH’s Phillip Society.
“Family philanthropy, like that of the Marcucci’s, enables our team of specialists to dream big and implement new ways to enhance compassionate care for our pediatric patients and their families,†says Howard Weinstein, MD, chief of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. “We deeply appreciate the support and impact such gifts have on our program.â€
