Students Will Participate In Anti-Violence Assemblies

As part of the Sandy Hook Promise and STOP (Student Teachers and Officers Preventing School Violence) Act grant received by Winthrop Public Schools, students in grades 6 through 12 will be participating in a day of assemblies on Nov. 14. Run by the Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) Promise Club, this day of assemblies is designed to teach youth how to identify signs that lead to violence.

Each grade level will have a unique focus and will introduce students to SAVE. The topics of discussion will center around school trauma, detecting signs of suicide (SOS) and depression in peers, and the importance of “see something say something.” One of the main goals of the day will be to arm students with tools that can help them better detect changes in behavior amongst their classmates. Presentations that focus on promoting inclusion and preventing isolation, will be led by other students, in hopes of offering relatable material that will leave a lasting impact.

The Sandy Hook Promise was established as a result of the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on Dec. 14, 2012. Led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the shooting, the goal of the promise is to honor the victims of gun violence while providing programs that will protect children against future acts of gun violence. As part of the Sandy Hook Promise, the SAVE Promise Clubs, are led by dedicated students who are passionate about protecting other students from gun violence across the country. By tackling isolation and promoting leadership, students in the SAVE Promise Clubs are fighting violence one school at a time.
