Student Highlight: Lerner Finds Reward in Volunteer Work

When 17-year-old Jillian Lerner is not busy with Drama Society, dance, and her after school and summer job at 21^st Century, she spends time volunteering at The Arbors Assisted Living Center. “I found out about the volunteer opportunity through my school and ended up continuing to go weekly because of how much I enjoyed it,” said Lerner, who is also on the high school gymnastics team and a member of the National Honor Society. “I think that giving back to the community is so important and volunteering at the Arbors always brightens my day.”

What do you like about working at 21^st Century?

I love working at 21st Century because it has made me realize my passion for working with children.

What is your favorite subject?

My favorite subject in school is definitely biology. Ever since middle school, I knew that is what I wanted to focus on in college. More specifically, I want to major in molecular biology with a focus in genetics. I have always found genetics to be extremely interesting and I’m hoping to further my knowledge and research in college.

Do you have any college/career plans?

I am not 100 percent sure what I want to do career wise in the future, but I am leaning towards genetic counseling for families. I would be able to incorporate genetics with my love of working with children and be able to help families along the way. 

Who are your role models? My role models are definitely my parents. They are both so hard working and determined but are also there for me whenever I need them. My mom is the most empathetic and kind person I have ever met and she has taught me so much about giving back to others. My dad is so fun-loving and has shaped my personality and interests whether it be sports, music, or anything else. They have both made me the person I am today and I couldn’t be more grateful to have them as my parents and my role models
