Honan Takes Out Papers for At-Large Seat

Former Board of Health member Tracey Honan has tak-en out nomination papers to run against incumbent Coun-cilor at-Large Phil Boncore, who has held the seat for 12 years since the town switched to a Town Council form of government in 2008.

“I believe that Winthrop is facing many different and im-portant issues, including flooding, exorbitant water rates, and timeworn infrastructure,” Honan said. “I believe we are in need of new sources of revenue, greater supervision and management of existing and future projects, and that we need to be better prepared for emergencies, such as extreme weather, and unforeseen contingencies.”

Honan has lived in Winthrop for more than 20 years with her husband, Matthew Honan, owner of the Honan Sign Company.  She was the acting interim health inspector af-ter the retirement of the long-standing inspector, and she served on Winthrop’s Board of Health between 2014 and 2016.  She has a background in biology, public health, and regulatory affairs (master’s degree in Biology from The Harvard Extension School and a master’s degree in Regu-latory Affairs from Northeastern University). Honan has worked for almost 20 years in the biotech industry, and is currently employed at Foundation Medicine in Cambridge.

“I hope to bring more transparency and oversight to Win-throp’s government, as well as more resilience to the Town.  I believe we are in need of new sources of reve-nue, greater supervision and management of existing and future projects,” Honan said.

In Precinct 4, the seat that is currently held by Heather Engman who recently said that she will not be seeking re-election, no one has taken out nomination papers and this is concerning to Town Clerk Carla Vitale. She’s hoping that someone will take out nomination papers. The candi-date only has to collect 50 signatures to get on the ballot.

In the race for seats on the Library Board of Trustees, Li-sa Schad and Ruth Koch-Ashton will be running for two, two-year terms. For two, four-year seats Stephen Nichols and Ronald Bergman will be candidates. The election is Nov. 5
