Lucerto Resigns From Council

Freshman Councilor-At- Large Michael Lucerto has announced that he will no longer be able to fulfill his duties because he’s moving out of town.

In an email to the Town Council and Town Manager, Lucerto stated he was resigning effective immediately.

“I have sold my home in Winthrop and will be moving to Salem,  at the end of the month making me no longer be eligible for my seat,” Lucerto wrote.

Lucerto has also been noticeably absent the past few meetings of the Town Council.

Attempts to reach Lucerto to give a further explanation on his departure were unsuccessful.

“It was an honor to have had the opportunity to serve as Councilor At-Large and I look forward to remaining part of the community as a small business owner,” Lucerto wrote. He is the owner of Incubate, a co-working space on Somerset Avenue.

As for filling Lucerto’s seat? It is up to the Town Council to decide which avenue to take.

“Thank you to all who supported me during my campaign for the position.  I would hope that my fellow councilors will support Robert DeMarco as my temporary replacement.  Rob has shown a great deal of interest in the seat, has been paying close attention to the issues in town, is a class act, and would be a good replacement,” Lucerto wrote.

Lucerto and DeMarco ran against each other in the 2017 race. Lucerto earned 2,379 votes town wide over DeMarco’s 1,799 votes.

“I have accepted the resignation of Mike Lucerto, Councilor at Large, from the Winthrop Town Council,” said Town Council President Ron Vecchia.  “I would like to thank Mike for his time served on the council and wish him best wishes and success in his future endeavors. We have begun the process as outlined in the town charter to address the sudden vacancy on the Winthrop Town Council.”
