Winthrop Memorial Day Services Set for Monday

Memorial Day Services will be held at 10 a.m. in the Winthrop Cemetery with keynote speaker William DiMento; attorney William DiMento, who served his country in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1961, will be the main speaker at the Memorial Day Exercises.

DiMento said he was honored to receive an invitation to speak at the ceremony.

“Winthrop is a special place when it comes to veterans,” said DiMento. “I have strong feelings about veterans. I will speak about the meaning of Memorial Day from the perspective of a Winthrop native.”

DiMento served as chairman of the Winthrop School Committee from 1967 to 1971. He recalls presenting a Winthrop High School diploma to then-student Richard Honan, who went on to serve his country in Vietnam. Honan has been recognized for his efforts in sending packages of supplies to Winthrop men and women serving in the U.S. military overseas.

Other speakers include Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo, State Sen. Joe Boncore and Town Council President Ron Vecchia. The Memorial Day Parade steps off from Walden Avenue and travels along Pauline Street at 2 p.m
