Special CBD meeting Tuesday

Form & Place will be presenting their preliminary work to the Planning Board at a Special Meeting on April 30 at 6 p.m. in the Lyceum Room located in the E.B. Newton building. They would like to give the Board and the public a chance to view, interact, and ask questions about the development of zoning maps moving forward. Winthrop residents are encouraged to attend. Belle Isle Marsh Clean Up April 27

Please join the Friends of Belle Isle Marsh and the DCR for a clean-up of the section of Belle Isle Marsh adjacent to the CVS site on Saratoga Street in East Boston on Saturday, April 27 from 9-11am.  Bring your family and friends and meet us at the far end of the CVS parking lot.  Light refreshments will be served.

Nomination papers available May 1

Nomination papers for Winthrop’s Town Election, to be held on Nov. 5, will be available on May 1 in the town clerk’s office in Town Hall.

This year’s races will include council president, councilor at large, school committee, library trustee, housing authority, and councilors in precinct one, two, four and six.

Papers must be returned to the town clerk no later than Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.

Townwide offices need 150 certified signatures. Precinct races need at least 50 signatures. Call the Town Clerk at 617-846-1742 with any questions.

Winthrop Spring Bike Kickoff & Ride

The Winthrop Spring Bike Kickoff and Ride will be held on Saturday, April 27 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.  The ride starts at the Parks and Rec Parking Lot at  Ingleside Park (Brookfield Rd)

Bring those bikes out of hibernation and down to the park for some family fun featuring:

•   Bike rodeo for kids

* Group ride at 11:30 a.m.

•   Free helmets

•  Lime-E Bike demos

• Bike Tune-ups and Repairs by Winthrop Cycleworks*(first come, first serve)

•  Free hot dogs and ice cream

•  Spring Community Peace Garden with FKO

• Raffle prizes (two kids’ bikes!)

• See the newly proposed Winthrop Bike Network  learn about plans to extend the East Boston Greenway to Winthrop

What is National Social Security Month?

April is National Social Security Month, a time dedicated to educating the American public about our programs and services. During this month, Social Security and its partners promote educational materials the public to emphasize the importance of financial planning.

The focus of this year’s National Social Security Month is to highlight the timesaving features of the my Social Security account. Our focused transactions are to:

• Request a replacement Social Security card

• Set up or change direct deposit

• Get a proof of income letter

• Change your address

• Check the status of your Social Security application

• Get a Social Security 1099 form (SSA-1099)

Rona Mael Town Scholarship

The Winthrop Scholarship Committee would like to remind the Winthrop community that there is still time to make contributions to the Rona Mael Town Scholarship for this Class of 2019 scholarship season by sending a check to the Winthrop Tax Collector’s Office, Town Hall, 1 Metcalf Square, Winthrop, MA  02152.  Make checks payable to Town of Winthrop, indicating Rona Mael Town Scholarship on the memo line. 

Mrs. Mael was a home economics teacher in the Winthrop public schools for close to 20 years. She also served as chairwoman of the Winthrop School Committee and was very active at Temple Tifereth Israel, Wnthrop.

Hazmat at Deer Island Emergency

There was a report of an over pressurized 55 gallon drum at the Deer Island MWRA facility on Friday, April 19. Emergency crews from the region responded to the incident. No spills were reported. No chemical or any other exposures were reported.
