Student Highlight: Cherico Heading to Salem State to Play Tennis

Cory Cherico credits his entire family for his success on and off the tennis court. The 18-year-old senior started playing tennis when he was just 11-years-old, and his hard work paid off when he went on to being named captain of the high school team when he was a sophomore. Cherico was voted as rookie of the year when he was a freshman and earned NEC All-Star status during his sophomore year, all while being nominate as MVP of the team. In addition to his notoriety on the tennis court, he was also recognized as captain and NEC All-Star of the soccer team and assistant captain of the hockey team. As his high school career comes to a close, he will be playing first singles and maintaining his spot as captain of the team.

Is it challenging to juggle both sports and academics?

I feel like the teachers are always available if you need extra help, so I don’t have too much of a struggle trying to keep up in the classroom.

What is your favorite subject?

My favorite subject in school is the Viking Longship class. The class is a great way to learn how to individually solve problems and learn about stuff not normally taught inside a typical classroom.

Any college/career plans?

I am going to Salem State University to play tennis. For my freshman year I’m going in undecided, but I am looking at multiple majors. I hope to become a chiropractor or physician’s assistant.

Who is your role model?

I don’t have one specific role model. I guess you can say it’s my whole family. My cousins Kenny, Luke and Noah got me into tennis, and they are the reason I play today. My cousin Andrea is my coach who is always keeping me calm on the court and giving me advice. My parents and grandparents are probably my biggest role models though. I have always aspired to grow up and be like my grandfather (Tony Martucci) or my dad (Cory Cherico), and my mom (Toni-Ann Cherico) and grandmother (Minnie Martucci). They have all helped me through the tough situations in my life and they are always right there when I need them.
