WHS Boys Lax Looking Forward To Start of Season

The Winthrop High boys lacrosse team has been busy preparing for the 2019 season, which will get underway this Saturday when coach Brian Donnelly and his crew host Manchester/Essex on the turf at Miller Field. The opening face-off is set for 11 p.m..

“Our preseason so far has been really excellent,” said Donnelly. “For the first time we have been able to get right out on Miller Field, which gave us a huge advantage to get some full-field practices in right away.”

Winthrop hosted a Jamboree this past weekend, inviting Stoneham, Mystic Valley, and Northeast Regional to compete in scrimmages.

“We moved the ball really well against both teams,” said Donnelly.  “We were able to play very strong team defense and went on to win both of our games. We were able to see how our systems work against different teams and compete at a high level.

“We are very excited for the upcoming season,” Donnelly continued. “We are returning the majority of our players from last year. We have a four-year starter, Drew DiMento, in goal for us. We have our entire defensive corps coming back in Mike McCone, Jack Silva, James Silva, and Ryan Hovermale, as well as adding some exciting new players, Chris Rodriguez and Tyler Gilson, to the group.

“Our attack is going to be led by returning senior captain Pat Sennott and rounded out by returning varsity starters Aiden Cifiuni and Matt Hurley. We have a small, but effective, midfield group, led by returning starters Luke Evangelista, Austin Daignault, Joe Mahoney, and Asa Baurle.”

Other members of the 2019 varsity squad are Chris Ferrara, Julian Osorio, Mike Morano, James Stimpson, Rob Tarantino, Conlon Peterson, Steve Perullo, and Ari Hain.

“We have a great mix of senior leadership and an explosive underclass with younger players ready to step it up,” added Donnelly. “We’re really looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish this year.” After Saturday’s opener, the Vikings will trek to Everett on Monday and will host Lynn next Thursday under the lights at Miller at 7:00.
