Michael McDuffee

Current member of Winthrop Town Council, Winthrop Yacht Club, Winthrop Lodge of Elks and active Holy Rosary parishioner

Michael McDuffee of Winthrop passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 6. He was 62 years old.

Michael was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1974 to 1978.

He received his bachelor’s degree from U. Mass Amherst, majoring in foreign language and graduated Summa Cum Laude. He was currently employed for Corolla Roofing Inc. as a project manager.

He was a current member of the Winthrop Town Council representing Precinct 1. Michael was a member of the Winthrop Yacht Club, Winthrop Lodge of Elks #1078, the Barn Boys Inc. and was also an active member of the Holy Rosary Parish in Winthrop.

He was the beloved husband of Joanne M. (Norris) McDuffee, devoted father of Michael McDuffee and his wife, Alexis of Lynnfield and Samantha McDuffee of Culver City, Calif.; adored grandfather of John, Adelaide and Maximilian McDuffee; cherished son of Robert and Marion (Colby) McDuffee of Winthrop and dear brother of Lynn McDuffee Giuliano Berry of Oviedo, Fla., Deborah McDuffee of Winthrop, Donna Infantino and her husband, Edward of Winthrop, Diane McDuffee of Dover, N.H., Robert R. McDuffee and his wife, Kristen of Winthrop and Denise Usseglio and her husband, Paul of Nashua, N.H. and brother-in-law to Michael Norris and his wife, Cathy and Michelle Massa and her husband, Louis, all of Winthrop. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

His Funeral will be held from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop, on Friday, Jan. 11, at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church-Winthrop at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Interment will follow in Winthrop Cemetery (Belle Isle Section). Michelle ‘Shelly’ Herdt

Registered Nurse

Michelle “Shelly” (McNeil) Herdt of Winthrop, formerly of Charlestown, passed away on Jan. 4. She was 57 years old.

Michelle was a member of the Winthrop Yacht Club and was a volunteer for Massachusetts Fallen Heroes. She was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and was a registered nurse and worked as a caregiver for the Gizmunt family.

She was the beloved wife of the late Randall C. “Randy” Herdt, devoted mother of Jarrett M. Herdt and his wife, Nicole, Alanna R. Herdt, and Lauren M. Herdt, all of Winthrop; adored grandmother of Makayla and Ethan Herdt. Born in Charlestown, she was the cherished daughter of the late James A. “Crash” and Joanne M. (Jones) McNeil, dear sister of Shelagh Hayes and her husband, Kevin of Dorchester, Joanne Vesey and her husband, Tommy of Charlestown and the late Brendan McNeil and loving niece of Sharon Fitzgerald. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her funeral will be held from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop, today, Jan.10, at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church-Winthrop, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery-Everett.

Bernice Spinney

Taught for 30 years at Winthrop Junior High School

Bernice E. Spinney, 101, of Scituate, formerly of Winthrop, passed away Dec. 26. 

The wife of the late Lloyd Spinney, she taught at Winthrop Junior High School for over 30 years. 

She is survived by her son Leon Spinney and his wife, Jennie of Scituate, R.I., four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.  She was the mother of the late Richard Spinney. 

Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12, with visitation from 11 to 11:30 a.m. in the chapel with a graveside committal service to follow at 11:30 a.m. at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 185 lake Street, Peabody.
