Student Highlight: Sophomore Shows Many Levels of Talent

John Cataldo is a true Winthrop teen. He started sailing at the Cottage Park Yacht Club (CPYC) when he was 11 years old, and is now an instructor for both the youth and adult sailing programs, where he teaches beginners the fundamentals of the sport. While continuing to take advanced sailing lessons to perfect his skills, he participates in regattas and is in charge of maintaining all of the boats for the youth sailing program. At only 15-years old, he is heavily involved with the CPYC assisting with events and fundraisers and having the responsibility of managing any technology issues that may arise. The busy Winthrop High School sophomore also spends several hours a week at Winthrop Cable Access Television (WCAT), where he edits and assists with directing. He already has several years of experience taping the annual tree lighting in town center. The active student council member shared more about his interests and hobbies…

Are you involved in any other activities?

I am also involved with the media department at the high school. Last year I helped Mr.  Donnelly teach middle schoolers basic digital video in an after-school program.

The past couple of weeks I have been doing the weather on “Wake Up Winthrop High.”

I enjoy skiing and have been doing it since I was 8 years old. I go skiing at Cranmore every weekend. I’ve also been on the high school sailing team since the 8th grade and I am the team communicator.

What is your favorite subject?

My favorite subject in school would have to be chemistry because I like doing experiments.

Who is your role model?

My role model is Ben Wilcox, the General Manager and President of Cranmore mountain. I have been fortunate to meet him, and he gave me a full tour of how operations work at a ski resort.

Any plans for college?

I’d love to go to Lyndon state in Vermont to major in mountain management and minor in meteorology. My goal is to become the general manager of a ski resort.
