Veteran’s Day Ceremony at Town Hall

The weather was on Winthrop’s side on Sunday morning as the crisp air and bright sun made for the perfect

backdrop for the Veteran’s Day ceremony. Residents both, young and old, town employees, and veterans gathered for a memorable day with a lineup of noteworthy speakers, all honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

While the town lawn was packed with those partaking in the ceremony, there was one soldier who showed his support and dedication in another way. Private First Class, Beau Schlichting, serving in the Army in Afghanistan, made his presence known via a Facetime cell phone call, and addressed the crowd, thanks to the help of today’s technology.

Town Veteran’s Agent and event organizer Rose Mazuchelli held a microphone up to his sister Antea’s cell phone so Schlichting could say hello to the crowd.

Principal Speaker Jim Guilfoyle, shared words about his time in the Navy. Guilfoyle served two deployments during his four-year enlistment.

“Never confuse the warrior with the war, the sacrifice is the same for all wars,” said Guilfoyle, who enlisted in 1966. “This isn’t just about those who served in war, but it’s also about those who served in peace, because they were prepared to go to war.”

He made sure to thank the American Legion for all the work that they do for the town, every single day of the year.

“I call upon these men and women for so many things, and they always show up,” she said.

“Without the sacrifices made by our veterans, we wouldn’t be here today,” said Town Manager, Austin Faison.

Also recognized during the ceremony were Police Chief Terrence Delehanty for his outstanding work supporting veteran eemployment. Cub Scout Pack 75 cited for their work around town.
