THANKFUL FOE HELP FOR ELECTION

To the Editor,

I just wanted to say that Assistant Town Clerk Joanne DeMato and myself are happy to report that the midterm election had a turnout of 60 percent! We are still busy finishing up the last details of overseas and military voters but our draft elections are posted on the homepage of the Town’s website. We had over 1,700 people vote early, we had over 300 people vote by absentee ballot.

We had over 75 people helping us during the last few weeks and we are very grateful for their time and commitment to our elections! In a perfect world, I would have more time to give more stats and fun election facts – but for now I just wanted to report that we had a successful and safe election with very few issues and that is due in part to our year-round commitment to training and preparation! Also special thanks to Speaker DeLeo and Sen. Boncore who came down to meet our student helpers and election workers, thank them for their service and bring refreshments to acknowledge their hard work! It takes a village and Winthrop has great support in our legislators and residents!

OPED WAS WRONG

To the Editor:

We read last week’s opinion piece “Global Climate Action Summit Silent on Natural Gas Progress” with chagrin. This article is shameful propaganda. The author Drew Johnson is a climate denier for hire—a shill for fossil fuel interests.

The piece first appeared in the Washington Examiner whose parent company is owned by Philip Anschutz, a billionaire with oil interests. The Transcript lists Johnson as a senior scholar with the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) .TPA  is an advocacy front group that is part of the Koch political network. And in 2017, Mother Jones listed Johnson as Number 10 in the “Dirty Dozen of Climate Change Deniers.” We are happy to rebut each of Johnson›s points, but that will require more space than that allotted for a letter.
