Since 2010, resident and Army veteran, Richard Honan has been the driving force behind “Trees for Troops,†a care package system that sends off some much-needed items to troops overseas. Over the years, Honan and his herd of volunteers have put smiles on the faces of hundreds of troops who are away from home during the holiday season. Christmas trees, cards, canned goods, and candy are a few of the items that are packed into the boxes and sent to military personnel to lift their spirits while they’re away making the ultimate sacrifice. Packages have been sent to a variety of locations including: Afghanistan, Korea, Turkey, Kuwait, the Persian Gulf, Africa and even as close as Maine.
“Maybe someone has a nephew, niece or son-in-law serving overseas that would like to receive a Christmas Tree Care Package,†said Honan. “I like to think that we put a smile on the soldier’s face, stomach and heart.â€
If you know someone who is serving overseas this holiday season, and you’d like them to be on the receiving end of one of Honan’s packages, please contact: rdhonan@comcast.net.
