Halloween Haunt Kicks Off Wednesday at 4 in the Center

Ghosts, goblins, dragons and superheroes will flood into the center business district for the “Halloween Haunt” this Wednesday, Oct. 31, starting at 4 p.m.

This is the 19th year of the Halloween Haunt that was started by Kathy Clark, who worked at the Winthrop Federal Credit Union. She came up with the idea to have businesses participate in a fun-filled spooky night in the Center Business District.

Today Tom Hankard and the employees of the Webster Credit Union make sure the tradition keeps moving along. The two credit unions merged in 2011.

“From my calculations we’ve been getting about 1,500 kids,” Hankard said. “And it’s only getting bigger. The businesses are ready for it and it’s sort of come to be expected. It’s a Winthrop tradition.”

This popular event brings out businesses from all over Winthrop, you don’t have to be a member of the center business district to join in. There will be a disc jockey

Boy Scout Troop 45 has attached scarecrows to poles all around the center.

The fun begins at 4 p.m. and ends around 5:30 p.m. so the trick or treaters can go home, have dinner and go out again in the neighborhoods.
