Alida Lagorio

Member of St. John’s Episcopal Church Altar Guild and Cottage Park Yacht Club Wednesday Ladies Bowling League

Alida (Birkmaier) Lagorio of Somerset Ave., Winthrop passed away at home on Sept. 22 at the age of 93.

Alida was born in Winthrop and was a life-long resident of the town. She graduated from Winthrop High School and raised her family in the town she loved. An avid traveler, she and her husband, Andy spent many years traveling the country to various locations for reunions with the crew of the USS Bennion (DD 662). When not traveling, Alida could often be found in her garden at home in Winthrop or at her lake house in Mendon. She loved to bake cookies with her grandchildren and walk as often as possible to a variety of locations throughout the town.

Alida was a member of the St John’s Episcopal Altar Guild and the Cottage Park Yacht Club Wednesday Ladies Bowling League.

The beloved daughter of the late Arthur W. Birkmaier and A. Madeline (Wilson) Birkmaier, she was the devoted wife of the late Andrew C. Lagorio, the beloved mother of Andrea L. (Lagorio) Leary and her husband, John J. of Marblehead, adored grandmother of Ryan A. Leary and his wife, Shannon of Winthrop and Kathryn E. Leary of Winthrop.

Arrangements were by the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop. A Funeral Mass at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Winthrop on Sept. 26 was followed by internment at Winthrop Cemetery. Elinor Moses

Longtime producer at Winthrop Community Access Channel

Elinor A. Moses of Shirley St., Winthrop passed away at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Oct. 7. She was 88 years old.

Born in East Boston, the beloved daughter of the late Mary (Barbere) and Michael Vitale, she resided in East Boston before moving to Winthrop over 57 years ago. She was a former member of the Winthrop Emblem Club, the Daughters of Italy and a producer for many years at the Winthrop Community Access Channel.

She was the devoted wife of Ronald and the loving mother of Thomas C. Moses of Winthrop and the late Judith J. Moses and her husband, Charles Capace of Brookline, the dear sister of the late Anthony Vitale, Michael Vitale and Dorothy O’Brien, sister in law of Mary Vitale of Winthrop, loving aunt of Mary, Donna, Gregory, Christine, Larry, James, Lauren, Dayna, Mark and the late Jay and special great aunt of Joseph, Sean, Lexi and Dorothy. She is also survived by many loving cousins, great nieces and great nephews.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Friday, Oct. 12, at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in the Holy Rosary Church, 1015 Shirley St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Interment to follow the mass will be in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Robert James Usseglio

Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and member of Winthrop High School Athletic Hall of Fame

After a brave battle with cancer, Robert James Usseglio passed away on Sept. 18 at the age of 80.

Robert (Bob) was born on Nov. 19, 1937 in Winthrop. He attended Winthrop High School where he served as Class President, and in 2010 was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. He attended Boston College and Rollins (on a baseball scholarship), and then graduated from dental school at Tufts University.

Robert joined the U. S. Air Force in 1963. He proudly served as a dentist for 25 years and retired at Carswell AFB as a full colonel in September of 1988. While in the Air Force, he received the Vietnam Service Medal and many other awards of distinction.

Bob excelled in everything he did. He was passionate about baseball, the piano, woodworking and landscaping. Bob was an avid golfer and an excellent ballroom dancer. He was a member of several ballroom dance groups in the Metroplex. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus for 30 years. Bob Usseglio touched the lives of many people and will be surely missed.

He is survived by his loving longtime partner, Glenda Brooks, his three daughters, Jann Bultman, Theresa Pearson (Bill), Donna Schueren (Mark), and his six grandchildren: Kelsey O’Neal, Kristina Pearson, Trevor Schueren, Lauren McKinney, Billy Pearson and Jason Schueren. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Helen L. Usseglio, and his five nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Wade Family Funeral Home, 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington, TX, 76013. Burial was at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas.

Joseph Davies, Jr.

Retired Boston Firefighter and member of Winthrop Elks

Joseph F. Davies, Jr. of Banks St., Winthrop, passed away at the Kaplan Family Hospice in Danvers on Oct. 4. He was 78 years old.

Born in East Boston, the beloved son of the late Elizabeth (Pierce) and Joseph F. Davies, Sr., he lived in East Boston before moving to Winthrop over 35 years ago. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a firefighter for the Boston Fire Department. He was also a member of the Winthrop Lodge of Elks.

He was the devoted husband of Ruth (Helm) and the special friend of Carol-Lynn Insley and her husband, Tom of Florida, Billy Magrath and his wife, Anita of Virginia, Jimmy Magrath and his wife, Tammy of Pennsylvania and the late Mickey and John Magrath; dear brother of Paul Davies and his wife, Ann of Andover and Ellin Santos of Winthrop; cherished grandfather of Christopher, Kimberly, Nick, John, Kevin, Will, Madelyn, Jack, Elisa, Chelsea, Willow, Giselle and Harley and great grandfather of Avi, Addy and Cooper. He was the dear friend of Olivia and Grace and is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home on Tuesday, Oct. 9, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church. Interment followed the mass in the Calvary Cemetery, Winchester.

Joan Bangs

Former member of Mother’s Club at St. John the Evangelist School and Winthrop High School

Joan M. Bangs of Woodside Ave., Winthrop passed away at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston on Oct. 3. She was 87 years old.

Born in Charlestown, the beloved daughter of the late Mary V. (Barry) and John Sullivan, she was a former member of St. John the Evangelist School Mother’s Club and the Winthrop High School Mother’s Club.

She was the devoted wife of Richard “Dick” Bangs and the loving mother of Patricia M. Winn and her husband, David of Winthrop, Janice M. MacKay of Winthrop, Paul J. Bangs and his wife, Sheree of St. Ung, Florida, David L. Bangs and his wife, Janet of Nashua, N.H. and the late Richard Bangs and cherished grandmother of Ryan and his wife, Erin, Christopher, Stephanie, Justin and his wife, Maggie, Matthew and Bridget and great grandmother of Evelyn and Eloise.

The funeral was conducted from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Saturday, Oct. 6 followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church. Rev. Peter Graziano celebrated the mass and offered prayers at the interment in Winthrop Cemetery.

Richard Page Sr.

Loving and caring family man

Funeral services were held privately for Richard R. Page, Sr. who died on Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Don Orione Home in East Boston following a long illness. He was 81 years old.

Richard was born and raised in the Eagle Hill section of East Boston. He was educated in Boston Public Schools and attended East School High School.

Richard began working in the construction industry, focusing on roofing and working on many of the buildings and properties in and around the City of Boston. He did this for many years and became an expert in his field. He later took a position at Textron and became an engineering technician, where he worked for approximately 15 years.

Richard and his wife married on March 19, 1966. They began their life together in East Boston where they raised their family and moved to Winthrop in 1996.

Richard was fondly known as a loving and caring family man. He especially enjoyed being a grandfather and cherished time surrounded by his grandchildren. He was also known for his passion for building models, especially model ships. His patient nature and the keen ability he possessed made him a master at his craft.

He was the devoted husband of 52 years of Toni L. (Capolupo) Page of Winthrop, the loving father of Michelle A. Benrifi and her husband, Allal of Haverhill, Donna J. Page of Winthrop, Richard R. Page, Jr. and his wife, Nicole of Lynn, Alicia J. Smith and her husband, Joshua of Chilmark, Martha’s Vineyard and the late Jonathan and Catherine Page; the adored grandfather of Alyssa, Zachary, U.U., Joshua, Richard, III, Anthony and Olivia and the dear brother of Lawrence Page and his wife, Theresa of Carver and the late Frederick Page.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
