CASA Awarded $5,000 from Elliot Whittier Insurance Services through Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Awards

Elliot Whittier Insurance Services has earned a 2018 Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award in recognition of its commitment to making positive change happen in the local community. The award includes a $5,000 donation that will go directly to Community Action for Safe Alternatives (CASA), a nonprofit organization committed to improving the quality of life for all Winthrop residents by fostering a safer community for youth with substance abuse prevention resources.

“Our team has helped support CASA’s efforts for over six years and we are incredibly grateful to be awarded the Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award so we can give back even more,” said Christine Millerick O’Keefe, an independent agent at Elliot Whittier Insurance. “CASA is here for young people during some of the toughest times in their lives and these funds will help continue to make a difference.”

Beginning today, Elliot Whittier Insurance and CASA will have their story featured on the official Safeco Insurance Facebook page (Facebook.com/SafecoInsurance) with a chance to raise an additional $5,000. If the story receives at least 200 likes, comments or shares on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn, the total donation for the nonprofit will double to $10,000.

“We are excited to share the inspiring stories of our agents with their communities through social media while raising funds for these outstanding nonprofit organizations,” said Christina Casal, Safeco Insurance Northeast Region Territory manager. “Safeco’s Make More Happen Awards program helps to recognize the amazing work agents do in areas like Winthrop and hopefully motivate others to do the same.”

CASA was founded by families concerned with substance abuse issues among local youth and comprises a coalition of over 150 community representatives. Employees at Elliot Whittier Insurance help the nonprofit host events like the “Fed-Up” Rally, “Recovery Month” and “Balling for a Cause” several times throughout the year to raise donations and awareness for the nonprofit’s programs.

With a $10,000 donation, CASA will be able to continue the work of the Youth Providers Network, which is a collaboration of youth-serving agencies in the city including the Parks and Recreation Department, 21st Century Afterschool, For Kids Only and the Winthrop Public Library teen programs. The network coordinates free activities for middle schoolers, helping them to remain drug-free and connect with trustworthy adults.

Safeco’s Make More Happen Awards focus on nonprofits in the areas of health and safety, education and civil service. Elliot Whittier Insurance was selected for a Make More Happen Award based on a photo and application demonstrating its commitment to CASA, which serves at-risk youths and their loved ones living in Winthrop.

Throughout 2018, Safeco will select a total of 24 independent agents for awards and donate up to $240,000 to the nonprofits they support. The Make More Happen Awards are a part of Safeco Insurance’s Agent Giving Program.

Community Action for Safe Alternatives (CASA) is a nonprofit organization founded in May 1997 by a group of concerned parents who saw a need to work to reduce drug use among their children’s peer group. CASA facilitates a collaboration of over 150 representatives from the community to work together with a goal of reducing risk factors for substance abuse and other high-risk behaviors.
