Winthrop Parks & Recreation Summer Activities begin July 2

Summer is fast approaching, and that means it’s time for summer activities.

The Summer Park Program at Ingleside Park will run from Monday, July 2 through Friday, Aug. 17 between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.  for children ages 6 through 14. The weekday program will feature crafts, games, sports and special events.

Sports and games will include tennis, basketball, soccer, street hockey, stick ball, dodge ball, four square and capture the flag, among others. Special events include field trips at an added cost and different theme days including slush day and pizza day.

While regular registration fee costs $360 per child, a discounted fee of $335 per child will apply for registrations made by Wednesday, June 27.

Family Fun Nights at the Park, co-sponsored by Winthrop Parks and Recreation and Winthrop Police Department, continues every Thursday until June 28. There will be complimentary food, water, face painting and additional activities.

Now a tradition for nearly a decade, the Cheerleading Clinic, run by the Winthrop High School cheering squad, will run between Monday, June 18, through Thursday, June 21, at 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium on Pauline Street. The clinic will be available for children ages 4 through 14.

The discounted registration fee of $100 per child  applies for those registered by Thursday, May 31. The regular fee will be $125 per child.

Thursday Summer Concerts at Ingleside Park Gazebo begins on July 12. The free concert begins at 7 p.m. The lineups will be as follows:

July 12: Just Kill Me Rico

July 19: Smokin’ Joe & the Henchmen

July 26: Memorylaners

Aug. 2: Rico Barr and The Jump ‘N’ Jive Review

Summer activities also feature two Boston Red Sox games. The first game will be part of a three-day trip to New York City. The group will depart Winthrop at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, June 29 and will leave New York at 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 1.

Prices, which include transportation, two nights at the Roosevelt Hotel and game ticket, are $395 for a double, $375 for a triple and $355 for a quad.

Game night is Friday against the New York Yankees. The second Red Sox game will be at Fenway Park on Thursday, July 12, against the Toronto Blue Jays.

New this year is the Junior Recreation Program for children ages 3 through 5. The 5-week summer program will be held from Tuesday, July 10, until Thursday, Aug. 9, from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. at Coughlin Park.

The program will feature games and activities led by Knucklebones’ Athletics and the Winthrop Parks and Recreation staff.

The discounted registration fee is $175 per child (must register by Wednesday, June 27). The regular fee is $200 per child. Children ages 3 through 4 must be accompanied by an adult, while children age 5 can stay alone as long as a copy of birth certificate is supplied.
