Winthrop Drama Society Gets Zany in Performance of ‘Sideways Stories from Wayside School’ May 10-12

The Winthrop Drama Society is excited to announce their latest performance, “Sideways Stories” from Wayside School. Adapted for the stage by John Olive and from the novels by Louis Sachar, the play is being described as a family-fun, over-the-top show with unexpected twists, flashy costumes, and a peculiar set.

As opposed to their award-winning performance of Faustus, which had a plot and atmosphere that was weighty and reflective, “Sideways Stories” is light-hearted and brimming with humor.

The setting takes place on the 30^th floor of an absurd school building that was designed by a  guy who had the idea of stacking the classrooms on top of one another instead of a layout that would be much more conducive to a typical school building. And the further up you go in the building; the more bizarre things get. The unconventional design is followed by an even more unconventional cast of characters and zany situations.

“We are pretty confident that everyone will leave the show feeling like they just had fun watching it,” said Sam Zichella, who is approaching the bittersweet ending of his high school drama career.

The change of pace is nice for the drama society, who is hoping to close the school year with something light and fun.

“I’ve been excited about this show since they announced it, said Cat Grimes, the show’s stage manager. “I’ve never built a room like this-in a contorted classroom.”

The show is kid-friendly, and the wild costumes are sure to keep the audience laughing.

“The costumes for this show are really wacky and weird, so it’s been very interesting making them,” said Zara Powell, who will be taking over the costume responsibilities, as Izzy Regis, costume designer, heads off to college.

The show will be performed on May 10, 11, and 12 at 7 p.m., with a matinee on the 12 at 2 p.m.. Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.Winthropdrama.com .
