Acone Hockey Tournament Set for Saturday, April 28

The Stephen Acone Memorial “Over 40” Hockey Tournament will be held Saturday, April 28, at 10 a.m., at the Larsen Skating Rink.

Stephen “Punky” Acone was born and raised in Winthrop. His true love was hockey and he was the original “rink rat.” Stephen known to his friends, co-workers and teammates, as Punky was a member of the 1975 Squirt New England Championship Team. He later graduated form Winthrop High School where he played hockey for the Vikings. He was a member of the 1984 and 1985 Northeastern Conference Title Winners. In 1985 Stephen was selected as a North Eastern Conference All Star. Stephen coached with Winthrop Youth Hockey for many years and played as an adult for the Elks in the Winthrop Senior League. Stephen’s second home was the rink and he could always be found there.

After working for the Suffolk County Sheriff Department for nine years in 1993, he was hired by the Winthrop Police Department, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Stephen’s service to the town, Winthrop Youth Hockey Association and the game of hockey for more than 40 years was a reflection of his ability, dedication, and interest in volunteering to the town he loved so much. We celebrate and honor Stephen by dedicating this tournament to him to raise money for his scholarship to Winthrop High School graduating senior(s) and former players for Winthrop Youth Hockey and Winthrop Police Association scholarship.

The scholarship(s) were created in partnership between the Winthrop Police Department and its members and Winthrop Youth Hockey Association. Both organizations thank the businesses and players who donated to make this event a success.

Winthrop Police Association and Winthrop Youth Hockey created this scholarship in 2015 in memory of player, coach, and police officer Stephen Acone. The goal of this tournament is conduct it annually to increase the amount of money granted through the scholarship. All profit from this tournament goes to scholarship(s). The goal is: One female former WYH member, one male former WYH member and one scholarship given out by Winthrop Police Association in Stephen’s name.
