Annual Winthrop Freedom Fighters 5K Road Race set for April 15

On the morning of April 15 at Winthrop High School, runners and walkers will take to the streets of Winthrop for a second annual year, to help raise funds for Richard Honan’s annual holiday initiative in sending hundreds of care packages all over the world to our service men and women.

In 2017, thanks to the hard work of Mr. Honan, American Legion Post 146 and several dedicated volunteers more than 200 care packages were sent out to our military men & women all over the world. Last year’s event provided $2000 worth of supplies and goods and this year owners of High5EM are focused on increasing that donation this year, in hosting an even bigger race.

Last year approximately 150 people participated in the 5K and this year organizers are forecasting reaching 200 participants. This year the focus is on reaching more youth. It’s important to demonstrate to today’s youth, the importance of supporting our military servicemen & veterans.

With even more outpouring support and involvement from community businesses already this year, we have no doubt this year will be even more successful than last year. If your business is interested in sponsoring the event please email High5EM at info@high5em.com or call 978-594-7050. They have several opportunities from “In Kind” donations to much larger corporate sponsorships.

Course: Race starts on Franklin Street, right onto Revere Street, right onto Hutchinson Street, right onto Crest Avenue which becomes Winthrop Shore Dive, right onto Beacon Street, right onto Shirley Street, Left onto Cutler Street across Veterans Road to trail across Lewis Lake Park, right onto River Road, right onto Cross Street, finishing on the Winthrop High Foot Ball field/track.

More about Richard Honan: A lifelong Winthrop resident, Richard Honan, is an active community member, family man, veteran, artist, boat builder, photographer and much more. Always working for the betterment of the community, he has devoted a large part of his life to this country and continues to work tirelessly for our service members and veterans. For the past sixteen years, Richard has sent hand written letters and care packages filled with support to servicemen and women deployed overseas, far from family and friends. With the help of the Winthrop community, he has been able to pack and ship over 35,000 pounds of care packages.
