WHS Class of 1968 to Hold 50th Class Reunion

The Class of 1968 Reunion Committee is in the midst of planning the 50th reunion of their class. The reunion will be held the weekend of Oct. 5-7, with all activities to take place in Winthrop.

The Reunion Committee is anxious to reach as many classmates as possible. If you graduated from Winthrop High School in 1968 or know someone who did, please have them contact the committee either through the Facebook page: Winthrop (MA) Senior High School Class of 1968 or the alumni website: https://whs1968reunion.weebly.com/. Or email: Fran50threunion@gmail.com for more information.

Plans are being made for a Friday night Welcome dinner/get together, Saturday activity during the day, Saturday evening dinner dance, and Sunday brunch. All activities are geared to rekindle old friendships (and maybe make new ones!), reminisce and laugh – something we do best.

We hope our classmates will start making their travel plans now! We will have updated details on hotel blocks and the reunion on our Facebook page and on our website. Contact Fran50threunion@gmail.com for more information.

FORUM ON FRACKING PLANNED ON MARCH 6

On March 6, a group of men and women from Western Pennsylvania, co-sponsored by Sen. Joseph Boncore, will be coming to Winthrop. The purpose of their visit is to speak about their personal experiences that severely impacted their lives including: family life, economic hardships and loss of homes/property that were caused by the process of “fracking”.

Fracking is the pumping of millions of gallons of H2O and caustic chemicals under high pressure thousands of feet below earth’s surface. The results are contamination of water resources, toxic air emissions, potential earthquakes and health impacts in the communities that host these industrial facilities.

The community is invited to come and listen to their stories and experiences. It is a reflection of present day environmental catastrophes, which will continue to negatively impact us not only now but also into the future, especially our children.

Please come and listen on March 6 at the Lyceum Room in the EB Newton School from 7 to 9 p.m.

Vaping & E-Cig Forum planned on March 8

A Vaping and E-Cigarette Community Forum will be held on March 8 at 6 p.m. in the Winthrop High School/Middle School. Jonina Gorenstein, JD, of MGH Community Health Associates will be featured in this roundtable Q&A with community leaders. All ages are welcome.

Harvey Leonard to Speak at annual meeting

WCVB-TV Chief Meteorologist Harvey Leonard will be the keynote speaker of the annual meeting of the Friends of Belle Isle Marsh on Sunday, March 11, from 2-4 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church Hall, 222 Bowdoin St. The event is open to the public.

Free Ballroom Dance Lessons

The Winthrop Library is offering free ballroom dance lessons and the class is limited to five couples. Applicants must register with the library – 617-846-1703

Children’s Library needs help while undergoing renovations

The Winthrop Public Library Children’s Department is asking for people to come in and take out 25-30 books for a month. The department is being painted and receiving new shelving so the staff has to remove all the books. Unfortunately, they do not have storage for that many books. Therefore the request.

Also, spring programs look great. The You, Me & Them Book Club will meet on March 21 with a new book title, “Towelhead” by Alicia Erian.
