COUNCILORS ATTEND CONFERENCE

Council President Ron Vecchia and several members of the Town Council attended the 39th Annual Massachusetts Municipal Association meeting and trade show at the Hynes Convention Center the past weekend. Councilors attended many workshops dealing with subjects that local elected officials deal with including the opioid epidemic, economic development, the new marijuana law, zoning and associated parking issues.  “It was a great opportunity for our new councilors to get educated on important issues facing local government and at the same time have an opportunity to meet local elected officials from around the state,” said Vecchia. He added that Saturday is the deadline for submission of resumes for the town manager position. It is his hope to have a recommendation to the full council by the end of February. The Town Council is still taking applications for residents to serve on various boards and committees, applications are on line or available through the town clerk’s Office in Town Hall.

CAPIC’s Fuel Assistance Program is Open for the 2017-2018 Season

CAPIC’s Fuel Assistance Program is accepting applications for this winter’s heating season.  The program serves families in Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop and assists households in paying heating bills from November 2017 to April 2018.   The program is open to tenants as well as homeowners, whose income is within 60 percent of the state median income.  Heat may be oil, propane, kerosene, gas or electric. COURSES OFFERED AT LIBRARY

Numerous courses and lectures have been announced at the Winthrop Public Library, 2 Metcalf Square. Gerard Leary will teach portrait drawing and creative writing for eight weeks from March 16 to May 4. There will be a two-part Holocaust lecture on April 10 and 24. NARFE TO MEET ON FEB. 7

The North Shore Chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) will hold its  free monthly meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 7,  at 1 p.m.,  at the Torigian Senior Center, 75R Central St., Peabody.
