Snow Ban Parking Tips for the Winter

The Town of Winthrop would like to remind residents of the town’s parking regulations.

Residents should be aware of regulations should the Town declare a parking ban.

According to town ordinance, all motor vehicles must be removed from town streets upon the announcement of an expected or impending snowstorm. Any vehicle that is not removed may be subject to ticketing or towing at the owner’s expense. All cars should be removed from Winthrop’s Public Streets.

Vehicles must be removed from these excepted streets immediately upon cessation of snow during daylight hours or, in the case of storm events occurring during the nighttime hours, by 8 a.m. in order to facilitate snow removal operations. Violators will be subject to ticketing or towing at the expense of the vehicle owner.

“It is important that residents follow the town’s parking regulations during any snow storm, even if we are only expecting a few inches, as blocking town streets can interfere with snow removal operations,” said Police Chief Terence Delehanty. “Please also make sure to clear the sidewalks near your home and check on your neighbors.”

Additionally, Winthrop’s town ordinance prohibits anyone from obstructing the public street or sidewalk without a permit. Therefore, any objects placed in the public way to reserve parking spaces will be removed and disposed of immediately.

Residents are also responsible for clearing any snow or ice on the sidewalk abutting their property, and cannot cause snow to be placed in the street or any public way in the process of removing snow from their property. Anyone found to be in violation of this regulation will be subject to a fine of $25 for the first offense, $50 for the second offense and $100 for the third and each subsequent offense.
