Search for New School Committee Member Following Callis’s Resignation

By Kate Anslinger

School Committee member Laura Callis recently resigned from her position on the Committee, and the board is searching for a qualified candidate to fill her spot for the remaining two years of the term. For nearly two years, Callis dedicated her time as a committee member and was assigned to several subcommittees including budget, curriculum, and policy.

Her resignation comes with a bittersweet ending, as her family will be relocating to Milton for a career in teaching, which she loves. Since Callis and her husband still have family and property in Winthrop they will continue to have a presence in the community, however; she will have to give up her role as committee member.

“There is certainly a loss with the unique skill-set that Dr. Callis brought to the committee,” said School Committee Chair Dawn Sullivan. “After our recent local election, I am confident there is someone in the community who has been inspired to get involved and will apply for the remainder of her term.”

In order to keep the momentum going, the School Committee is hoping to fill the position soon. If interested, email letters of interest including any relevant information or experience to [email protected] no later than 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21. A joint meeting of the School Committee and Town Council will be held on Monday, Nov. 27, at 6 p.m. to appoint the new member.

The School Committee is also searching for a new superintendent of schools with the position expected to be filled in the spring. The interim superindent of schools is Lisa Howard.
