WHS boys soccer defeats Saugus on Senior Night

The Winthrop High boys soccer team celebrated Senior Night in fitting fashion with a 3-0 victory over Saugus this past Tuesday, at which seniors Mateo Alzate, Marcus Ferreira, and captain Steve Tracy were recognized for their contributions to the WHS boys soccer program.

Junior captain Jaylin Cordes notched his fifth goal of the season midway through the first half to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.  Junior Renols Cahani played a kick free to junior Fabricio Berlatto, who then sent a great ball into the box which Cordes converted into the back of the Saugus net.

A few minutes later, Berlatto delivered a free kick, this time to sophomore Kevin Dorr. Kevin’s first shot was saved by the Saugus keeper, but he followed up the rebound and put it past the keeper to make it 2-0.

Berlatto concluded his fine day with about 15 minutes left in the contest, applying the coup de grace with a strike from outside the box that beat the Saugus keeper.

Viking keeper Corey Cherico turned in another fine effort to record the shutout. WHS head coach Kyle Gagin lauded his team’s fine defensive effort, particularly the backfield play of  Cahani.

Last Friday Winthrop hosted Lynn Classical and battled the Rams to a nil-nil standoff.

“It was a hard-fought game, in which Classical had a majority of possession, but we defended well and junior goalie Corey Cherico had a great game in net, making a number of great saves,” noted Gagin. “Defensively we played a lot better than we did offensively, as we struggled to get much going up top.”

Earlier in the week, the Vikings dropped a 6-0 decision at Gloucester in a contest played at 8 p.m. “Although that game didn’t go as well as we had hoped, there were some positives,” said Gagin. “Freshman Josh Flores was able to get his first start for varsity, and freshman Augie Cherico made his varsity debut in net towards the end of the game.”

Gagin and his crew are set to conclude their 2017 campaign Saturday at Stoneham.
