Winthrop Beach Cleanup

Winthrop Beach Cleanup, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 9-10 a.m. This Coastsweep Cleanup is sponsored by the The Friends of Winthrop Beach and Mass Coastal Zone Management.

 

Winthrop Democrats to meet

The Winthrop Democratic Town Committee will meet on Wednesday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Robert A. DeLeo Senior Center, 35 Harvard Street. The agenda will include updates from the State Committee including details for the 2018 State Convention and a look forward to future events.

 

Mammograms offered

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Winthrop Health Department and Dana Farber will be doing Breast Cancer Education on Thursday, Oct. 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Larsen Rink Parking Lot. A Dana Farber Mammography Van will be there. Pre-registration is required by calling the public health nurse, Deanna Faretra, at 617-846-1077 x1061. There will be educational materials, education staff and “freebies” for women of all ages to promote women’s health and wellness.

 

Weekend overnight detours on a section of Route 1 north and south

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has announced that Route 1 north and southbound in Malden/Revere between Lynn Street and Route 60 (Squire Road) will be closed to traffic during upcoming overnight weekend hours from Friday, September 22, through Sunday, October 29.

The closures and detour routes will be in place to guide drivers during the following times on these weekends:

Route 1 southbound: 11 p.m., Friday, through 7 a.m., Saturday.

Route 1 north and southbound:  11 p.m., Saturday, through 8 a.m., Sunday.

These traffic impacts are necessary in order to allow work crews to safely and effectively conduct deck repairs on the bridge that carries Route 1 over the Northern Strand Trail.

The detour routes are as follows:

Drivers on Route 1 south will exit at Lynn Street, and then turn left onto Salem Street, right onto Lynn Street, left onto Wesley Street, left onto Beach Street/Squire Road (Route 60) and proceed to Copeland Circle where vehicles can rejoin Route 1.

Drivers on Route 1 north will exit at Route 60 (Squire Road) at Copeland Circle and proceed west, turn right onto Wesley Street, right onto Lynn Street, and left onto Salem Street where vehicles can rejoin Route 1.

Proper signage, variable message boards and police detail officers will be in place throughout the detour routes. Drivers are encouraged to make informed decisions before heading out onto the roadways. Those traveling through the area should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.

These operations are weather dependent and subject to change without notice.

The I Love Winthrop Arts & Music Festival is coming to French Square in Winthrop center on Saturday, September 23 from 1 to 6 p.m., and will be a beautiful fall day filled with delicious food, live music, outstanding local art, free fitness classes, a variety of kid-friendly activities and much more.

The first annual event is being presented by Blackstrap BBQ, CBD Folks & Friends and Boston Local Co-Op, with proceeds benefiting Winthrop’s Veteran’s Food Pantry. A full list of festivities along with a live music schedule is below:

5K Road Race Sept. 23

Join in on some of the fun of the I Love Winthrop Festival by participating in the 5k on September 23! The race starts 11 a.m. beginning and ending in Winthrop Center! Work on Winthrop Shore Drive

The following work items are ongoing along Winthrop Shore Drive.  Expect to see these activities continue over the next two weeks.

The work will continue to move north and includes:

  • Removal of the ocean side sidewalk and curb
  • Excavating to install the storm drainage.

New work activities starting, including:

  • Installation of foundations and conduit for new light poles on the oceans side of Winthrop Shore Drive
  • Installation of new water pipes, replacing aged water pipes in Winthrop Shore Drive and improving reliability of the water system.  This work is made possible through the cooperation of the Town of Winthrop and the DCR.
  • Seawall repairs in the Highlands area between Locust Street and Grovers Avenue:
  • The granite block seawall work includes injection grouting to waterproof behind the wall and repointing of the joints between the blocks.
  • This work is tidally dependent, so work hours will vary to coincide with favorable tidal conditions
  • This important work on the seawalls will be followed by landscape improvements to the park.
  • The construction work areas will be closed off for the safety of the public.

Traffic and Parking Impacts

  • During the work day, traffic is detoured off Winthrop Shore Drive to Shirley Street.  Detour signs are provided to direct traffic.  State and Winthrop Police are provided to assist in the detouring of traffic.
  • After the work day is completed, two-way traffic is restored on Winthrop Shore Drive.
  • Please note that where construction is scheduled to occur, there will be signs prohibiting parking between 6 am and 4 pm.  Please remove cars from Shore Drive by 6 am to ensure that construction can begin promptly at 7 am.  Your cooperation is appreciated.
