RESIDENTS URGED TO DISPOSE OF DOG WASTE PROPERLY

The Winthrop Health Department and the DPW have reported blockages in catch basins around Ingleside Park caused by plastic dog waste bags. Dog owners are urged to dispose of dog waste bags in proper trash receptacles and not into storm drains. These storm drains and catch basins lead directly to Winthrop beaches and the harbor. This waste elevates the E.coli counts in the water. State mandated water testing is done to ensure that local beaches are safe and clean for all to use. Elevated counts from the weekly tests results in the closure of beaches. Dog owners, please think of the health of your neighbors and of your community and kindly dispose of your dog’s waste properly.

 

CONCERT ON THE LAWN

Th Paul Speidel Jazz Trio will play on the lawn at the library Aug. 15, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Set out your lawn chair and a picnic and enjoy this free program brought to you by the Winthrop Public Library and the Friends of the Winthrop Public Library.

 

FREE PROGRAMS OFFERED AT WINTHROP LIBRARY

“Songs and Stories to Build a Better World” will be presented free on Tuesday, August 1 at 2 p.m. at the Winthrop Public Library, 2 Metcalf Square. For more information call 617-846-0616.

The Winthrop Public Library presents a participatory program for families by Parents’ Choice Award winning singer & storyteller Davis Bates.

STREET LISTING BOOKS ARE NOW AVAILABLE

Residents can stop by the Town Clerks office at the Winthrop Town Hall to purchase a copy of Winthrop’s Annual Street Listing that contains residents names and addresses. Copies are $15. The Town Hall is open Monday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

 

NAVY BAND NORTHEAST AT INGLESIDE PARK

Navy Band Northeast will visit Ingleside Park as part of the Concert in the Park series on Wednesday, August 16, at 7 p.m. Led by its Director, Lieutenant Joel Borrelli-Boudreau, its 30-member Pops Ensemble performs traditional works for concert band while raising public awareness of the Navy and the importance of naval service. The Pops Ensemble regularly features vocalists who perform patriotic classics, operatic arias, and Broadway showstoppers. The ensemble seeks to delight and unite audiences of children, students, adults, and especially U.S. Military Veterans. Ingleside Park is located on Walden Street, Winthrop. The concert is free and open to the public.

Navy Band Northeast Director Lieutenant Joel Borrelli-Boudreau is from Methuen. He holds a Master of Arts in conducting from George Mason University, a Doctor of Musical Arts in orchestral conducting from The Catholic University of America, and a graduate performance diploma from the Peabody Conservatory.  Borrelli-Boudreau enlisted into the U.S. Naval Academy Band, performing with the Concert Band, Next Wave Big Band, Brass Quintet, Trombone Quartet, and marching/ceremonial units. In September of 2010, he was promoted to the rank of chief petty officer, and subsequently received his commission in October 2012.  He has served officer tours as director, Navy Band Fleet Support Unit and Training Support officer, Naval School of Music.  In November of 2014, he was assigned as Assistant Director, U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band, and in June of 2017, was promoted to Director, Navy Band Northeast in Newport, RI. Lt. Borrelli-Boudreau’s personal military decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, as well as numerous other unit and personal awards.

 

Established in 1974, Navy Band Northeast is based on board Naval Station Newport and is one of 11 official U.S. Navy bands worldwide, providing musical support for military ceremonies, recruiting, morale and retention programs, and community relations. This group of 30 professional Navy musicians supports more than 300 engagements annually throughout an 11-state area of responsibility, performing regularly for high-ranking military and civilian dignitaries, Navy Recruiting, public outreach and awareness efforts, and partnership in education programs throughout the Northeast United States. The primary components of Navy Band Northeast are: pops ensemble, marching and ceremonial bands, popular music group, Brass Quintet, Woodwind Quintet, and Woodwind Trio. All ensembles perform a wide range of music from patriotic, classical, contemporary, big band swing, country, and the latest top-40 hits.
