The Chris Tsiotis Basketball Court at WHS is A Deserving Tribute

The dedication of the basketball court at the new Winthrop High School in honor of former Winthrop High basketball star Chris Tsiotos truly is a deserving honor for one of the greatest basketball players in Viking annals.

Chris averaged 28.5 points per game for the Vikings when they were perennial Northeastern Conference champions in the early 1970s and were among the powerhouses in schoolboy circles on the North Shore.

Chris went on to star at Suffolk University where he enjoyed a stellar career that resulted in his induction into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. After his graduation from Suffolk, he played professionally in Greece.

Chris is a member of a legendary sports family in our community — his older brother Nicky was an outstanding hoop player, his daughters Poli and Nikki helped lead the WHS girls’ team to great success just a few years ago, and his Mallios niece and nephews, Katerina, Dino, and Vasilli, all were star players at WHS.

Chris also has made an impact off the court in our community with his strong support for civic endeavors, including the Viking Pride organization.

However, if there is any one attribute about Chris, who has been a lawyer in Winthrop for many years, that is most striking, it is this: He is one of the the most humble persons we ever have known.

Despite his imposing 6’-5” frame and record of amazing accomplishments, Chris Tsiotis always has been a “regular guy” who never has forgotten his roots and who has acknowledged the debt he owes for his success to the support he received throughout his life from his family, friends, and community.

In countless ways, Chris Tsiotis is a true giant in our town, and we look forward to seeing his name grace our basketball court for years to come.
