Lois Solari

Retired Public Health Service Naval Captain

Lois E. Solari passed on January 9, 2017 in Dallas, Texas.

She was born to the late Carmela (Aloia) and Edward J. Solari in Winthrop.

She graduated from Boston College and received a Masters Degree in Nursing from Boston University. She worked in the nursing sector before entering the U.S. Public Health Service from which she retired as a Naval Captain. Lois resided in Dallas, Texas for over 25 years.

She leaves behind her brother Edward Solari; nieces Renee Solari of El Cerrito, California, Camille Solari of Los Angeles, California, grand nieces, many cousins in the Boston area and dear friends in Texas.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the committal service in the Cross Street section of Winthrop Cemetery on May 20 at 10 a.m.

Joan Furey

Past President of both DAV Chapter 44 Auxiliary and Winthrop Emblem Club

Joan K. Furey of Main Street, Winthrop passed away at the Don Orione Nursing Home, East Boston on May 13. She was 82 years old.

Born in Boston, the beloved daughter of the late Charlotte (Whippin) and Stanley P. Oliver, she was a life long resident of Winthrop. She worked for the Winthrop Housing Authority for several years and retired from the Revere Housing Authority as a coordinator.

Joan met William Furey at the Winthrop Lodge of Elks during the 1950 Saint Patrick’s Day Dance following his recent U.S.M.C. discharge and they became close friends until July 1950 when his reserve unit was activated for the Korean War and later during his transfer back to USMCR.

Joan was a graduate of Winthrop High School and Newbury College. She was Past President of the Winthrop Emblem Club #15 and a charter member of their Drill Team that participated in many local social events and became two time winners of the National Emblem Club Drill Team Competitions. She was a five year secretary of the Winthrop Memorial Day Committee and Past President of the JFK Chapter 44 Disabled American Veteran Auxiliary that was very active in nationwide efforts to protect American Military Services and Veteran Benefits. President John F. Kennedy was a member of this Chapter and his mother, Rose was a Past President of DAV Chapter 44 Auxiliary.

Joan was the devoted wife of William Furey and the loving mother of Sean W. Furey and his wife Deborah of South Carolina, Colin Furey and his wife Patricia of Winthrop and the late Kathleen C. Nocton; cherished grandmother of Danielle Furey of San Francisco, Bryan Furey of Attleboro, Charlotte Nocton, William Nocton, Kevin Furey, Kelley Furey and Kenneth Furey, all of Winthrop; dear sister of Clifford Oliver of New Hampshire, Ethyl Hellender and her husband, Arthur of Winthrop, Charles Oliver of Florida and Rachel Reardon of New Hampshire.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop today, Thursday, May 18 from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Friday, May 19 at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Interment to follow the mass will be in the Cross Street section of Winthrop Cemetery.
