Larry Holmes Was A Great Guy

The passing two weeks ago of Larry Holmes removes from our town a gentleman who truly loved the Town of Winthrop.

Larry was what our long-time, late publisher Andrew P. Quigley would refer to as a “great guy.” For many years, Larry was well-known to almost everybody in town as the proprietor of the Hi-Tide restaurant at Delby’s Corner, where seemingly everyone in town gathered for the best breakfasts in Winthrop on weekends. His affable demeanor made him a natural as a host in the restaurant business.

Larry was an astute businessman with great common sense, but he also had great compassion for people, qualities that served him well as the town’s Veteran’s Agent and as the interim head of the DPW and as the interim Town Manager.

When the selectmen asked Larry to serve in both of those latter capacities, he performed so well that he was asked if he would take them on a permanent basis,  offers he declined.

He was happy and eager to do what he could to help out when the town needed him, but equally happy to return to a job he loved, the town’s Veteran’s Agent, where Larry, a Vietnam War vet, could help his fellow veterans.

But as anyone who came to know Larry realized, the lights of his life were his wife Kathleen, to whom he was married for 50 years, his children Kelly and Jay, and his grandchildren. He was devoted to his family, as they were to him.

We know we join with all of our fellow residents in offering our condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.
