Superintendent prepares for goodbye
Â
Dear Members of the School Committee,
It is with deep emotions that I submit my letter of resignation to you as Superintendent of Winthrop Public Schools effective, Friday, June 30, 2017. First and foremost, I want to thank you the School Committee, past and present, for trusting and allowing me the opportunity to serve as Superintendent of Winthrop Public Schools. It has been a privilege and honor!
To Leadership and staff of Winthrop Public Schools, thank you for Raising the Bar for all our students. Your dedication to our students is witnessed daily by your unselfishness to reach every child. It was your commitment to our students that allowed the community to believe in the Vision of Winthrop Public Schools and build a new High School/Middle School for all our students so that they could compete in the 21st century.
To the Winthrop Community, thank you for believing in us and making Winthrop Worth It, for our children!
To my central office staff, Patty, Susan, Diane, Beth, Stacy and Michelle: Thank you for making every day a joy to come to work. You taught me that no matter what stress I faced daily, that I was never alone and that you folks were always there to lend a hand when needed. You truly are the unsung heroes of Winthrop Public Schools!
To our Winthrop students: In the words of Dorothy to the Scarecrow: “I will miss you the Most!†You have been the reason I come to work. I have enjoyed watching you all grow and look forward to seeing you all prosper in the future.
In Closing, I have been truly blessed these past six years to be a part of a truly remarkable organization and community. Please note my heart will always be tied to Winthrop. My home is here. My wife has a family business here and our kids are here. During my next chapter in life I intend to be able to enjoy coming home to this wonderful community each day and watch it flourish as I know it will continue to do. It goes without saying there are many amazing people with which I have worked these past six years. It will be tough to say goodbye.
Sincerely,
John Macero,
Superintendent, Winthrop Public Schools

Committee thanks Kellsey supporters
Dear Editor,
The Committee of “A Night for Kellsey†would like to express our extreme gratitude to all the donors and attendees who made the event last Saturday night a tremendous success. With your support, we are able to relieve a small portion of the financial burden this family has encountered during Kellsey’s treatment.
To the Allen family and friends, we thank you for sharing this precious family with us. It was easy for our community to fall in love with them and truly inspiring to witness their bravery and positivity during such a difficult time.
The event was a beautiful display of the power a community can have when all join for a common purpose. We are dubbing Winthrop the little town with a big heart; the love for one of its own is unmatched. Each business, community group, teacher, and resident we approached for support helped in whatever way they could and without hesitation.
We are humbled by the support, both near and far, and we thank you for the opportunity to put the pieces together for an unforgettable night.
Warmest Regards,
Crystal Costantino, Erica Gore, Kelly Anderson, Marissa Ferrara, and Megan Petrola

In response to Senator Sal DiDomenico's letter to the editor, I find it ironic that he lambastes President Trump for making hard critical budget cuts while never questioning Obama's "open check" policy. When will the bleeding heart liberals learn that there has to be an end to unsustainable spending. So Sal, let me cite an analogy.---- A middle class family of four with an annual income of $100,000 and credit card limits of $200,000 decide to make purchases beyond their means and max out their cards. Faced with the reality that they can no longer have the life style they've been used to for the last eight years, they find that their life style not only returns to where it should have been at the $100,000 mark, but significantly less due to the repayment of the money owed on the cards plus the interest. Thus, Mr. and Mrs. have to deny their kids and themselves many of the everyday purchases including types of foods and clothing. Sal, Obama crippled the economy for these kids who you so adamantly advocate for. Before lambasting Trump again, look in the mirror and ask yourself "what could I have done to prevent this?"
