Macero Heading to Stoneham:Has Led Local Schools for More than 6 Years

After narrowing it down to four finalists out of a pool of 47 applicants, the Stoneham School Committee announced John Macero as their top pick for its superintendent position.

After an extensive interview process, Macero contended with the following candidates for the position: Superintendent of Holliston Public Schools, Dr. Brad Jackson; Fiske Elementary School Principal, Thomas Martellone; and Superintendent of Wareham Public Schools, Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood.

“I am both excited and grateful for the opportunity extended to me by Stoneham Public Schools,” said Macero, who will start his new position on July 1, 2017.“ My heart will always be tied to Winthrop. My home is here, we have a family business here, and our kids are here. I intend to be able to enjoy coming home to this wonderful community each day and watch it flourish, as I know it will continue to do. It goes without saying that there are many amazing people with which I have worked these past six years. It will be tough to say goodbye to them.”

Macero currently makes $145,615 as the Winthrop Superintendent. He is negotiating his salary with Stoneham but it is expected to be between $175,000 and $185,000.

The Winthrop School Committee will now be tasked with forming a superintendent search committee that will be dedicated to a nationwide search for the next superintendent of the Winthrop Public Schools.

“I wish John the very best,” said School Committee member Ron Vecchia. “I know I will be looking for an experienced, well rounded candidate who can hit the ground running. Education in Winthrop has moved forward over the past few years and I’ll be looking for a candidate that will be hands on in the school buildings each day while also taking input from the community.”

Macero was at the helm during the planning and construction phase of the $82 million middle/high school on Main Street. Prior to working in Winthrop Macero worked in the Revere Public Schools as the principal of the Wayland School. Last year he was also a superintendent finalist in his hometown of Saugus.

The Stoneham Public School district consists of the following institutions: Colonial Park Elementary School, Robin Hood Elementary School, South Elementary School, Stoneham Middle School, Stoneham High School and an Integrated Pre-school.

“In the three years I’ve worked with John he has shown commitment to the Winthrop students and his staff,” said School Committee Chair Dawn Sullivan. “This is an opportunity for us to reflect on how far we’ve come and set a new course for our future.”
