The Winthrop Town Council is set to vote on the Wallace B. MacLean tennis courts matter at its meeting Tuesday night. The issue – whether to tear down the current courts and add parking spaces across from the new high school/middle school building – has really captured the interest of the town. Ideally, there would be new tennis courts built across from the high school so those student-athletes would have a safe and convenient setting to play their home matches – and the Winthrop team and the visiting team would have access to locker room and restroom facilities inside the school building.
The fact that this issue has generated such an outpouring of emotion is not surprising. Winthrop residents care deeply about every aspect of this town and that’s a good thing.
