Town Council News and Notes

By Sue Ellen Woodcock

During Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting, Town Manager James McKenna shared that town officials and the owners of an old nursing home on Pleasant Street held a site plan review to determine the scope of the work.

The owners of the former Governor Winthrop Nursing Home are proposing a 16 townhouse-style condo units. There will be 10 two-bedroom units and six, one-bedroom units on a lot that is 31,532 square feet. The project is estimated to be about $2.2 million.

The Planning Board is the permit granting authority and they will meet with developers at it January meeting. A neighborhood meeting is also planned.

In other town council business:

• The town is actively advertising that it is looking for candidates to fill the new position of Deputy Police Chief.

• McKenna said that the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is in agreement to locate a dog park near the Kilmartin Pathway at the Belle Isle Marsh. He said the DCR has put up two dog parks on DCR land in the past. Permits and designs are still needed and the DCR pointed the town toward some grants.

• The council made several appointments. Valentino Capobianco, Erin Murray, Julia Wallace and Dawn Quirk were appointed to the Airport Hazards Committee; Jan Stevens and Tom Dederian were re-appointed to the Tree Committee and Judith Pradell was appointed to the Center Business District Committee.
