A Haunting Good Time:Webster First Federal Again Organizes Annual Event for Children

There’s nothing scary about the Town Center on a regular day, but on Halloween Eve there will be all sorts of ghosts and goblins, princesses and super heroes wandering around.

Webster First Federal Credit Union will once again organize a haunted eve for the ghouls and goblins of Winthrop. This is the 17th year the festivities have been put on by the Credit Union according to Credit Union President Tom Hankard.

With the help of the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce, and the police and fire departments, the center will be blocked off and merchants will hand out treats (or a trick). The event is geared toward children ages 10 and under and they must be accompanied by an adult. The event starts at the Credit Union at 15 Woodside Ave. from 4 p.m. to 5 or 5:30 p.m. The Credit Union will pass out trick or treat bags.

“In the past we’ve had upwards of 1,500 kids,” Hankard said. “It’s a great way to bring people to the businesses in the center. Although other businesses are welcome to come, bring a table and participate.”

“Families can congregate around French Square,” Hankard said. “We’re encouraging businesses to give out non-food items due to all the allergies out there.”

Hankard explained that Kathleen Clark, the daughter of Joe Clark, who was the former CEO of Webster First Federal Credit Union, is the one who started the tradition.

“This is our Winthrop tradition that will be going on for many years to come,” Hankard said. “This is a good family friendly event where you don’t have to worry about cars. You can freely walk around. The streets will be blocked off starting at 3 p.m.

The Credit Union won’t be giving out dollar bills, but the 50 or so businesses who participate will be giving out plenty of treats.
