Miss Dempsey and the Women’s Stanley Cup

We love that photo in this week’s Sun-Transcript of Cummings Elementary School teacher Jillian Dempsey and the students in her fifth grade class posing with the Isobel Cup, which is the National Women’s Hockey League’s version of the Stanley Cup. Jillian was a star player for the Boston Pride, who won the first-ever Isobel Cup, and each player on the team is allowed to showcase the trophy in her hometown.

We noticed one of Jillian’s students wearing a Harvard football jersey in the photo and that must have brought a smile because Jillian played her college hockey at the world’s most prestigious university in Cambridge, where she was nominated for the Patty Kazmaier Award.

As someone once said, “It’s not bragging when it’s a fact,” and the fact is that Jillian has been one of the best female hockey players in the world since her days at Harvard and it’s great that her students got the opportunity to see the championship trophy for which she and her Pride teammates worked so hard to win.
