John Craven Jr.

Retired executive chef

John G. Craven, Jr. of Winthrop passed away on September 12 at the Lighthouse Nursing Care Facility in Revere. He was 68 years old.

John was a U.S. Army Veteran serving from 1971 to1973 holding the rank of 1st LT. He was a graduate of Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH and was a current member of their alumni association. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the Compass Group, a food service company, as an executive chef

The beloved husband of Carol Swenson (Swenson), he was born in Brookline, the son of John G. Sr. and Dorothea (Maul) Craven of Dayton, OH; dear brother of Robert Craven of Beaver Creek, OH and James Craven of Melrose Park, IL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and his two faithful companions, his dogs Annie and Gabe.

A visiting hour will be held in the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop, on Saturday, September 17 beginning at 10 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service in the funeral home at 11a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Gerald Turner

Of New Hampshire, formerly of Winthrop

Gerald L. Turner of Dover, NH, formerly of Winthrop, died suddenly on August 31. He was 36 years old.

Gerald was a graduate of Winthrop High School, Class of 1997. While in school, he was played football and enjoyed being in the drama club. He was currently employed at Tyco Electronics in Portsmouth, NH as a laborer.

The beloved fiancé of Karol Laskey of Milton, NH, he was born in Malden, the cherished son of Gail M. (Sbrizza) Turner and the late Gerald L. Turner of Loudon, NH; loving brother of Kerri Owen and her husband, John of Lakeville, Jeremy Turner of Danvers, and the late Ryan M. Turner; dear nephew of Lewis J. Sbrizza Jr. and his wife, Debra of Rochester, NH and Russell Sbrizza of Dover, NH and is also survived by his three nieces, two nephews and cousins.

Albano ‘Barno’ Tassinari

Proprietor of Barno’s TV’s, a man who could fix anything

Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Visitation on  Saturday, September 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Vertuccio and Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107) Revere for Albano C. “Barno” Tassinari who died at the Eastpointe Nursing Care Center in Chelsea on Monday, September 5 following a brief illness. He was in his 98th year.

Born and raised in East Boston, he attended Boston Public Schools and enlisted in the U.S. Army in January of 1941 to bravely and proudly serve his country during World War II. He served as part of the 82nd Airborne Paratroopers and was honorably discharged in August of 1945 after his valiant service.

Barno was a man who could fix anything but specialized in television repair. He became known to many people in East Boston and surrounding areas as “Barno’s T.V.”

He was a proud father, loving grandfather and dedicated brother. His grandchildren were something he treasured greatly. He always had a great disposition and wonderful sense of humor and he loved to make people laugh.

He was the loving father of John Tassinari, James J. Tassinari and his wife, Linda, all of Peabody and the late Sharon Tirrell; cherished grandfather of Nikki L. Veytsman and her husband, Alex of California, Michael J. Tassinari and his wife, Maggie and James A. Tassinari, all of Peabody; former husband of the late Mary (Christoforo) Tassinari and the late Dorothy (Mahoney) Tassinari and beloved brother of Antenorie Tassinari of Melrose, Giaconda Smart of Arlington, Gloria Overton, Tosca Tassinari, both of East Boston and the late Massimilliano “Max” Tassinari.   He is also lovingly survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was the dear friend of the late Phyllis Erickson.

Immediately following the visitation, a funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home. Interment will be private. Debra Paolini

Graduate of Winthrop High School, Class of 1977

Debra A. Paolini of East Boston passed away unexpectedly on September 9 at the Mass General Hospital. She was 57 years old.

A late employee of Hudson News Logan Airport and a graduate of Winthrop High School, Class of 1977, she was the cherished daughter of Joan (Albano) Tordiglione of East Boston and the late Anthony Paolini; loving mother of the late Toni-Marie Paolini; dear sister of Anthony Paolini III of Revere, Denise Stella and her husband, Joseph of Revere, Jeffrey Paolini of Saugus and Lisa Bodoin of Salem. She is also lovingly survived by many nieces and nephews.

Lottie Murphy

Winthrop Catholic Women’s Club member, former Cub Scout, Brownie leader, and night school sewing instructor

Lottie T. Murphy of Pleasant Street, Winthrop passed away at home on September 6. She was 90 years old.

Born in Fall River, the beloved daughter of the late Teresa (Krupa) and Jacob Stefanik, she was a resident of Winthrop for over 66 years and was employed as a desk clerk at the Hilton Hotel for many years. She was a former Cub Scout and Brownie leader and a member of the Winthrop Catholic Women’s Club. She also loved to do arts and Crafts and taught sewing at night school.

She was the devoted wife of the late John A. Murphy, Jr. and the loving mother of John A. Murphy, III and his wife, Wallice E. of Hingham, Gloria G. Murphy of Winthrop, Kathleen Ahern and her partner, James Dowd of Stoneham, James J. Murphy of Winthrop and Robert M. Murphy of Winthrop. She was the dear sister of the late Helen Maceik, Celia Watras and Joseph Stefanik; the cherished grandmother of Cheryl LeBlanc, Gerald Ahern, Michael Moriarty, Timothy Murphy and Thomas Murphy and is also survived by eight great grandchildren.

Her funeral was conducted from the Ernest P. Caggiano and Son-O’Maley Funeral Home on Friday, September 9 followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church. The Rev.
