Welcome, Jillian Dempsey to Winthrop Schools

We enjoyed very much the front page story and interview in last week’s Sun-Transcript with Jillian Dempsey, who will be teaching fifth grade at the Cummings Elementary School this year. Jillian is a great role model for Winthrop students with her exceptional achievements in academics and athletics, especially in the sport of ice hockey where she became one of the top collegiate players in the country at Harvard University.

In her senior year for the Crimson, she was nominated for the Patty Kazmaer Award, which is women’s hockey version of the Hobey Baker and Heisman Trophy Awards. Jillian, no doubt inspired by Mike Eruzione’s Olympic hockey success, earned an invitation to try out for the 2014 U.S. Olympic team and she hopes  be a candidate for the 2018 U.S. squad. Jillian is currently a professional hockey player for the Boston Pride team that won the National Women’s Hockey League championship this past season. Jillian was a scholar-athlete at the Rivers School in Weston before going on to excel at Harvard.

We wish Jillian well as she continues her teaching career in her hometown.
