As expected, Speaker Robert A. DeLeo delivered on two valuable grants for this town: a $250,000 child safety grant and a $25,000 grant for the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce.Governor Charlie Baker had vetoed the grants, but the Speaker garnered the votes to override the Governor’s vetoes.
We’re sure that Chief Terence Delehanty welcomes the grant that will be used toward the safety and security of our schoolchildren. Chamber Executive Director Betsy Shane will certainly use the grant to help local businesses in the community.
The attainment of these grants is yet another example of Speaker DeLeo helping our town and his district. Winthrop residents know that Speaker DeLeo has become the most powerful and influential lawmaker on a statewide basis, but the Speaker has always been true to his hometown and has delivered for this town and his constituents in countless ways.
We remember Bob when he was serving on the Winthrop Board of Selectmen and a few years later, his first election to the House of Representatives; we remember his stint as a coach in the Winthrop Little League and his annual sponsorship of a Winthrop High football dinner; we remember him being at every big Winthrop sporting event — such as the back-to-back Super Bowl played by Tony Fucillo-coached teams at Miller Field in 1992 and 1993 — and Bob attending his son Robbie and daughter Rachele’s youth sports, AAU, and college games.
In short, Bob DeLeo always has been true to his roots.
Speaker DeLeo’s efforts do not go unnoticed by Winthrop residents. They have supported him at the polls with tremendous votes and we look forward to Bob continuing to serve in his prestigious position as the leader of the 160-member Mass. House of Representatives in the years ahead.
