The Agganis Game

From Anthony Palmer to Anthony Fucillo, the Agganis Football Game has always attracted the best high school seniors in the area. The memories of playing in the game that is named for the great Lynn Classical athlete Harry Agganis will last a lifetime.

We talked with former Revere High star Jose Escobar, who was one of the assistant coaches in this year’s game, and he remembered vividly that Anthony Fucillo led his team to a 14-7 victory over Jose’s team in the 2005 Agganis Game. That game was played at Bertram Field in Salem as the new Manning Field was being constructed. Needless to say, Fucillo was named the South MVP in the game.

Anthony Palmer had the honor of wearing Harry Agganis’s No. 33 jersey in the 1994 Agganis Game. Palmer caught two touchdown passes and a conversion in the game to earn MVP honors. Palmer won back-to-back Item Player of the Year awards as the best player on the entire North Shore, a feat that has not been duplicated in the history of the award. We also recall Dylan Driscoll being an Agganis MVP on a team coached by his father, Sean Driscoll, in 2015.

Representing Winthrop in this year’s game was Alex “AJ” Winter, who excelled for the South team as a starting corneback.
