State Police Investigate Incidents Occurring at Belle Isle Marsh

Troopers from the State Police Revere Barracks and the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County are investigating an assault that occurred Wednesday, June 1 at the Belle Isle Marsh Reservation on the Revere-East Boston line, as well as an incident three days earlier that same location that caused fatal injuries to an elderly man.

The first incident occurred at Belle Isle Marsh on Sunday, May 29. On that date, Daniel Pepe, 83, of East Boston, suffered serious injuries while walking in the reservation. He was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital and died from his injuries on June 1. State Police were notified of his injuries that night.

Mr. Pepe’s injuries were so serious that he was not in a condition that would allow him to provide a description of what happened to him. How those injuries were caused remains under investigation.

The cause of the injuries suffered by Mr. Pepe on May 29, which were reported to State Police on June 1, the date the victim died, remain under investigation. However, in light of a second incident in which a man suffered injuries in the marsh, as well as additional evidence developed by State Police, we are investigating whether the incident involving Mr. Pepe is related to the assault on June 1.

On the afternoon of June 1, State Police were notified of an assault against a 67-year-old Lynn man who was walking in the Belle Isle Marsh reservation.  That victim suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The assailant in the second incident is described as a white male in his late 20s or 30s, approximately 5’9” tall, and wearing a hat, t-shirt and shorts that were all beige or brown in color.

Anyone with information about either incident is urged to call State Trooper Joel Balducci at 617-727-8817, extension 5670.

State Police are increasing high-visibility patrols in the Belle Isle Marsh area starting immediately.
