Winthrop High School Hosts Pride Day

By Kate Anslinger

As school opened on Tuesday morning, a team of students passed out rainbow colored bracelets in honor of the school’s dedication to Pride Day.

As part of Wellness Week, the day was geared toward building acceptance with individuality and also offered education on the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender, and Questioning) community.

Speakers from BAGLY (Boston Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth) shared their stories in front of an auditorium filled with middle school and high school students. Following the speaking portion of the event, students were given the opportunity to write down anonymous questions.

“I am so proud of the students in the Wellness Committee and GSA for their hard work and dedication, said Winthrop High School Adjustment Counselor Jane Rupp. “I think this event made a powerful impact on the school community. The students were attentive, respectful and asked a lot of appropriate questions. A special thank you for our speakers and to CASA for arranging the speakers.”

Next week Winthrop High School will be highlighting mental health awareness and bullying awareness as Wellness Week continues.
