It’s Now Official:Joseph Boncore Elected to State Senate

By Cary Shuman

A campaign that began with hope and optimism ended in triumph Tuesday as attorney Joseph Boncore was elected state senator for the First Suffolk and Middlesex District that includes his hometown of Winthrop.

Boncore was unopposed in the general election after finishing first in a field of seven candidates in the April 12 Democratic primary. With no Republican candidate on the ballot, the final election was a coronation and then a step in to the history books for Boncore as the first state senator elected from the town of Winthrop.

At a victory party at J.W.’s in Winthrop, Boncore thanked his campaign workers and supporters for helping him achieve victory.

“I just want to thank them for standing up for me and working hard through a hard-fought election,” said Boncore. “It was a wonderful experience and it was wonderful to share it with so many great people that were behind me.”

Among those turning out to congratulate Boncore were former state senator Anthony Petruccelli, State Rep. Adrian Madaro, Boston City Councillors Sal LaMattina and William Linehan, Precinct 1 Councillor Paul Varone, former Town Council President Jeff Turco, and well-known political consultant Ed Cash.

Lydia Edwards, who competed for the seat in the Democratic primary, also congratulated Boncore at the celebration.

“I think Lydia and I were well aligned on a lot of the issues,” said Boncore. “All the candidates gave the voters a good choice. Lydia stood out to me as someone who’s going places and I’m happy to call her a friend now.”

Councillor-at-Large Philip Boncore, father of the newly elected senator, called it a proud day for the family and said his son will represent the district to the best of his ability.

Senator-Elect Joseph Boncore, with his proud parents, Councillor- at-Large Philip Boncore and Goldie Boncore.

“This is one of the proudest days of my life to see my son reach his goal of being a senator for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” said Mr. Boncore. “I am so proud of him. I know he will represent this district well. He cares about people and that’s why the people voted for him. They saw that and I know that he will continue to care about people and he will do the best job possible for the citizens of this district.”
