Paul Ciarcia

Retired property manager

Paul J. Ciarcia of Winthrop passed away on January 24. He was 75 years old.

Paul served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1959 to1960. He worked for the Charles Bulfinch Condominium Association as a Property Manager.

He was the beloved husband of Jeanne M. (Dooley) Ciarcia. Born in Revere, the son of the late Antonio and Anna M. (Venuti) Ciarcia, he was the devoted father of Robert C. Mahar and his wife, Traci of Danvers, Paula J. Robson and her husband, Sean of Winthrop and the late Glenna M. Carew; adored grandfather of Alanna M., Robert C., Jr., and John G. Mahar of Danvers, Olivia J., and Chloe M. Robson  and Christopher P. Carew, all of Winthrop; dear brother of John Ciarcia and his wife, Marie of Londonderry, NH, Joseph Ciarcia and his wife, Adeline of Danvers and the late Anthony Ciarcia. He was the brother-in-law of Susan Ciarcia of Winthrop and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop on Friday,  January 29 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass  in St. John the Evangelist Church at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Cremation to follow will be private. Ferdinand ‘Fred’ Martino

Proprietor of Martino’s Market in East Boston, active in many organizations

 

Ferdinand C. “Fred” Martino of Winthrop, formerly of East Boston, died peacefully on January 24 surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Martino was a US Army veteran of World War II,  Venerable Sons of Italy, Winthrop Lodge 205, Grand Knight East Boston K of C #2962, a past member of the Retail Grocers Association of Massachusetts and a member of the East Boston Columbus Day Parade Committee. He was a past employee of the MBTA and the proprietor of Martino’s Market, Maverick Square, East Boston.

He was the beloved husband of over 65 years to Theresa (Lagana) Martino; devoted father of Elisa Clancy and her husband, William of East Schodack, NY, Ferdinand Martino and his wife, JoAnne of Winthrop, Andrea Fonte and her husband, William of Quincy and Christopher Martino and his wife, Rachael of Concord; dear brother of the late Gerald Martino, William F. Martino, Joan Cusimano, Mary Arena, Peter Martino and Connie Bombaci; cherished grandfather of Angela, Lauren, Jennifer, Kristen, Jonathan, Samuel, Anthony, Andrew, Roxanne and Michael and is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will honor Fred’s life by gathering on Thursday, January 28 from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home, 971 Saratoga St. (Orient Heights) East Boston and again on Friday at 8:30 a.m. before leaving in procession to St. John the Evangelist Church, Winthrop Street, Winthrop for a Funeral Mass celebrating Fred’s life at 10 a.m. Services will conclude with Fred being laid to rest in Winthrop Cemetery (Belle Islle section.) Grace Cassetta

Of Winthrop, formerly of East Boston

Grace V. (English) Cassetta of Winthrop, formerly of East Boston, passed away on  January 22 surrounded by her loving family.  She was 89 years old.

She enjoyed knitting, bingo, Foxwoods, baking Biscotti and Pizzelles. She worked at Sophie’s and Pierre’s Bakery in East Boston.

She was the beloved wife of the late Carl M. Cassetta; loving mother of James Cassetta and his wife, Donna of Swampscott, Carl Casetta and his wife, Lea of Peabody and Steven Cassetta and his wife, Gina of Winthrop; cherished grandmother of Nicole, Michael, Rocco and Kristin Cassetta; great-grandmother of Cory Hitzenbuhler and Jack Cassetta; caring sister of Mary Hansen of Winthrop, Dolly Massone of Everett and the late Josephine Carpenito and Luciano and Michael English.  She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Kevin Mortimer, Sr.

Lifelong Winthrop resident

Kevin Mortimer, Sr., a lifelong resident of Winthrop, passed away on January 24 after a brief illness. He was 69 years old.

Mr. Mortimer was employed as a safety officer in the trucking business for the past 12 years and prior to that he worked at the Winthrop Lodge of Elks as a bartender for more than 20 years. He was an active member of the Student of the Month Committee.

Born in Winthrop, the loving son of the late Henry (Hank) Mortimer and the late Opal M. (Quick), he is survived by his wife Barbara (Parker) of Winthrop and two sons, Kevin Mortimer, Jr. of California and Sean Mortimer and his wife, Nadine of Winthrop. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Alyssa and Brennan of Winthrop.

His funeral will be held from the Joseph R. Frazier  Funeral Home in Winthrop today, Thursday, January 28 followed by a Funeral Mass at Saint John the Evangelist Church. Interment will follow at the Belle Isle Section of the Winthrop Cemetery. The family has requested that expressions of sympathy in Kevin’s memory be donated to the Viking Pride Foundation, P.O. Ann Kelley

Retired Elder Services case manager, member of many organizations

Ann M. (Corbett) Kelley of Winthrop passed away at the Massachusetts General Hospital on January 20. She was 71 years old

Ann was a member of the Cottage Park Yacht Club, the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association and the Winthrop Catholic Woman’s Club. Prior to her retirement, Ann worked as a Case Manager for Chelsea-Revere-Winthrop Elder Services.

She was the beloved wife and best friend of Robert N. “Bob” Kelley; dear sister of the late Joan Bonnett and Thomas F. Corbett Jr. and dear sister-in-law of Ethel Kelley of Winthrop. Born in Revere, she was the cherished daughter of the late Thomas F. and Julia R. (Petzke) Corbett, Sr. and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Paul Belyea

Man of integrity and dignity

Paul A. Belyea of Temple Avenue, Winthrop passed away peacefully in his home on December 23 with the love of family and friends around him.

Paul was a retired employee of MWRA and Viking Taxi. He was a dedicated employee of the Town of Winthrop and State of Massachusetts. Paul was a man of integrity and dignity. He helped all of mankind, always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. Never mistaken and never misunderstood.

He is survived by his loving wife, Diane Lisker Belyea, his brother David Belyea, nieces, nephews, devoted friends, Maria, Todd and Nicoletta Matthews. He is also survived by many loving and caring friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved uncle, William Murphy.

 Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the Memorial Service in  St. John Episcopal Church, corner of Bowdoin and Buchanan Street, Winthrop on Saturday, January 30 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be to the Save-A-Heartbeat, Kitty Rescue, PO Box 1044, Saugus MA 01906.

Rose ‘Babe’ Giangregorio

Retired exectuive secretary and longtime member of many social and literary organizations

Rose M. “Babe” (LaRaia) Giangregorio, an East Boston native and a long time Winthrop resident,   died unexpectedly on January 20 at Mass. General Hospital, Boston. She was 87 years young.

Born and raised in East Boston, she attended Boston Schools and was a graduate of Girls High of Boston, Class of 1945. As a young girl, she worked for the Commonwealth of Mass. at the State House as a secretarial aide. For 35 years, she was executive secretary to the business agent of Bethlehem Steel, Local 25.

“Babe” was the always energetic to the max and enjoyed every facet of life. She married her long-time sweetheart, Lawrence Giangregorio in 1950 and nourished him until he died on March 1, 1985, suffering from a long tenure with cancer. She was a many year member of the Winthrop Lodge of the Sons of Italy, (Ladies Chapter), and was active in many of their charity events and social events. Never idle, she was also a long-time member of the Winthrop Senior Center (Robert A. DeLeo Senior Center) and a vibrant member of their Italian Club and Zumba Club. And, in addition to all, she was a member of the Waterfront Crew Poets of Winthrop, a chapter of the Mass. State Poetry Society, Inc. She joined with her son, Alan, a membership in the Dicken’s Fellowship – Boston Branch.

She and her husband moved from East Boston to Winthrop in August of 1967. “Babe” was a very proud Winthrop resident, but never lost her love and passion for the East Boston, that she knew.

She was the devoted mother of Alan L. Giangregorio and his wife, Denise of Winthrop and Lawrence P. Giangregorio and his wife, Irene of Melrose; the cherished grandmother of Adam A. Giangregorio of Jamaica Plain, Luke N. Giangregorio of Winthrop, Paul J. Giangregorio of Melrose and Alyssa R. Giangregorio of Beverly;  the dear sister of Isabelle C. Gardiner of Brookline and the adored aunt of Leslie F. Ciampi and her husband, Peter and their family of Lexington.

May “Babe’s” zest for life be an inspiration to all.
