Eva Millar

Long time secretary at First Church of Winthrop United Methodist; member of Eastern Star and Rainbow Girls

Eve H. Millar of Upland Road, Winthrop passed away at The Arbors in Winthrop on January 7. She was 68 years old.

Born in Winthrop,  the beloved daughter of the late Priscilla (Root) and George V. Lorance, she has been a Winthrop resident since 1984 and was employed for many years as the secretary for the First Church of Winthrop United Methodist. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Rainbow Girls.

She was the loving mother of Wendy Millar and her companion, Marc Doyle, Kurt Millar and Valerie Millar, all of Winthrop; the dear sister of Dawn, Bruce, Bonnie, Larry, Carl, Dean, Susan, Adam, Lucinda and Dee Dee; the cherished grandmother of Brittany, Serena, Ian, Jouliette and Cullen and the loving companion of the late Fenton “Joe Mac” McLaughlin. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and chosen family.

Her funeral service was held in the First Church of Winthrop United Methodist, Winthrop on Monday, January 11. Committal was private. Joseph ‘Joe’ Cernaro

United Airlines employee; football and baseball fan

Joseph ‘Joe’ G. Cernaro of Winthrop passed away on December 27 at the Sawtelle House in Reading surrounded by his loving family. He was 59 years old.

Born in Oswego, NY, he resided in Winthrop for the last 12 years.

The cherished son of the late Benedetto and Mary Ann (Pasiak) Cernaro, both of Oswego, NY, Joe was employed with United Airlines in both Syracuse and Boston for over 27 years. He will be greatly missed by those he worked with. Joe was an avid fan of both football and baseball and played softball in Oswego for many years. He enjoyed frequent walks with his dog, Sully, at Deer Island.

He was the devoted husband of 32 years of Yvonne (Pettie) Cernaro of Winthrop and loving father of daughters: Lauren of Fredericksburg, VA and Emily of Winthrop; the dear brother of David (Kaye) of Helena, MT, Kathy Coon of Oswego, NY and Thomas (Eileen) of Oswego, NY. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews including Rich (Alek), Rob and Krista Coon of Oswego, Jamie (Ashley) Cernaro of Port Charlotte, FL, Jason Cernaro of Oswego, NY,  Michael (Katie) Cernaro of Billings MT, Tricia (Thomas) Carpenter, Stephanie Johnson and Alyson and Christopher O’Leary, all of Oswego and Shannon Pasco of Boston as well as great nieces and great nephews.

The funeral was conducted from the Ernest P. Caggiano and Son-O’Maley Funeral Home, Winthrop on December 30 followed by a Funeral Mass in the Holy Rosary Church, Point Shirley, Winthrop. George Duyon

Honorary life member of Winthrop Elks, past treasurer Winthrop Council, 162 KoC, member AFL-CIO for the US Postal Union

     George R. Duyon of Winthrop passed away at the Whidden Hospital in Everett on January 7. He was 96 years old.

George was a US Army veteran of World War II. He was an honorary life member of the Winthrop Lodge of Elks #1078, past treasurer of the Knights of Columbus-Winthrop Council #162 and a member of the local AFL-CIO for the US Postal Union.

George’s love of his life was his 65 year marriage to his wife, Dorothy and his loving adoration for his grandchildren. He enjoyed baseball, especially the Red Sox, a good card game, the couples bowling league at the Winthrop Elks, gardening for his tomatoes and refinishing furniture.

The beloved husband of Dorothy R. (Sullivan) Duyon, he was born in Lynn,  the cherished son of the late Renie and Mary (Curdo) Duyon. He was the devoted father of Kevin F. Duyon and his wife, Paula of Londonderry NH, Mary A. Bitetti and her husband, Sam of Norwell and John P. “Jack” Duyon and his wife, Lisa of Winthrop; adored grandfather of Rory, Hayley and Mackenzie Duyon, Sara, Sam, and Susan Bitetti, and Ryan and Tim Duyon and the dear brother of Dorothy “Dot” Cieszka-Dubrachek and her husband, Cy of Deltona, FL, and the late Joseph and John “Jack” Duyon.

Ella Pepi

Loved her family above all. Her laughter, loving care, and kisses will be missed

Ella G. (Ripandelli) Pepi of Winthrop, formerly of East Boston, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, January 10. She was 91 years old.

Born in East Boston on February 7, 1924, she was the only child of the late Rachela (Tarchea) and Girolamo Ripandelli and the granddaughter of the late Mary and Peter Tarchea of Walpole. She was the beloved wife of more than 55 years of the late William Pepi.

Ella attended East Boston High School and later had a long career as a Manager of New England Mutual Life Insurance Company and then Head Teller at Cambridge Trust Co. She was an active communicant at Saint Mary Star of the Sea Parish in East Boston for 75 years. Ella enjoyed dancing, music, vacationing, travel, and entertaining others. She especially loved cooking for her family who she loved so much. Her pasta dinners complete with her “gravy,” chicken cutlets, and “Mimi” cookies were a delight and a staple not to be missed. Above all, she loved her family and was a devoted wife, dedicated mother, and proud grandmother and great grandmother. She especially enjoyed spending time vacationing with them, supporting them, encouraging them, and feeding them. Her last clearly spoken words were “you are all wonderful.”

Ella’s survivors include her children, Gerald Pepi and his wife, Carol of Winthrop and John Pepi and his wife, Sandra of Maynard; her grandchildren: Jennifer Pepi and her late husband, Gregory of Winthrop, Lisa Oliphant and her husband, Robert of Maynard, Rachel Williams and her husband, Wally of Brockton, Michael Pepi and his wife, Shawna of Reading, Laurie Igo and her husband, Christopher of Marshfield, Alicyn Thompson and her husband, Chris of Winthrop, Kristen Kerouac her husband, John of Stow, Potak Lam and his wife, Vanessa of Danville, CA, and the late Joshua Pepi of Winthrop. In addition, she leaves more than 20 great grandchildren of whom she was so proud. Her laughter, loving care and kisses will be missed.

Her Funeral will be held from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop today, Thursday, January 14 at 9 a.m. A Funeral Mass will follow in St. John the Evangelist Church-Winthrop at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be at Holy Cross Mausoleum in Malden. Gertrude Ann Rosa

Retired RN, active in many organizations, considered by many as positive inspiration, role model, and confidant

Gertrude Ann Rosa, a life long resident of Winthrop, passed away peacefully at home on January 11. She was 91 years old.

Born in Winthrop, she was a graduate of Winthrop High School, Class of 1941 and The Mount Auburn School of Nursing, Class of 1944. She worked for many years at the Winthrop Community Hospital in Winthrop and then worked until her retirement at Gillette Company in South Boston as an Industrial Nurse. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Winthrop Historical Society, Popular Authors Literary Club ( PAL), Margaret Circle of the Methodist Church and former choir member. She was an avid reader and used her Kindle Fire for books, music and email. She will be remembered for her selfless caretaking of her family members, as well as her heroics in saving a man’s life at Gillette, and attempting to save lives when an Airplane went down between Logan Airport and Winthrop in 1963.

She took special interest in all of her family’s achievements as well as their challenges making each one feel empowered by her love. Her spirit was buoyant, ever the optimist, giving anyone in her presence full attention and enthusiasm and leaving that person with a special sense of personal connection. Many of her friends and relations considered her a positive inspiration, role model and confidant.

She was the daughter of the late Marion (Roberts) Crafts and Gardner Hutchins Crafts, the wife of the late Anthony A. Rosa and the late Earl Coyle, the loving mother of Loretta Brooks of Metuchen, NJ, Lucinda Carpenter and her husband, Albert Carpenter of Plymouth and Nicholas Rosa of Winthrop and the beloved step mother to Katherine (Coyle) Shea. She was the cherished grandmother of Rosalind Brooks and her husband, Richard Lamm of Milltown, NJ, Anthony Rosa and Joseph Rosa, both of Winthrop; devoted sister-in-law of Glenns Rosa of Stoneham and Frances Cardone of Saugus; beloved aunt to Donna (Rosa) Vanderbeek and her husband, David Vanderbeek. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

The family wants to especially thank Lynne Palizzolo for her 24/7 loving care of Gertrude at home over the past 11 months and the nursing team from Commonwealth Clinical Services, Inc. of Winthrop.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Ernest P. Caggiano and Son-O’Maley Funeral Home, 147 Winthrop Street, Winthrop on Saturday, January 16 from 10 to 12 p.m. A funeral service will follow the visitation in the funeral home. Additional graveside services will follow at the Winthrop Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to charity of your choice.
