Vecchia Announces for Winthrop School Committee Seat

Former Selectman Ron Vecchia has announced that in spite of his broken foot and limited mobility he will be a candidate for one of the three open seats on the Winthrop School Committee in the November 3 election. He thanked those who had sent good wishes and encoragement to run.

Vecchia, was elected three times to the Winthrop Board of Selectman, elected to the Board of Health twice and was appointed to the Conservation Commission by former selectman and town council president tom reilly. Vecchia also served for over 25 years as a town meeting member, on the Cable TV Advisory Committee, Ferry Study Committee, School Building Committee, the Chase School Study Committee just to mention a few.

Active in many community organizations he is a founding director of Winthrop Community Access Televisions (WCAT), and produces the popular program “Community Forum with Ron Vecchia”. The program is the longest running public affairs program on Channel 3 in Winthrop. He is Past President of Winthrop Rotary and currently serves on many community based organizations and is currently serving on the town of Winthrop board of licenese, apointed by Town Council President Peter Gill.

Recenly retired from General Electric, Vecchia has extensive experience in town government as well as in the private sector and would like to put that experience to work on the Winthrop School Committee.

Commenting on why he way running, Tom Riley said….“With seven grandchildren in the winthrop system i have a substantial interest in a quaility well rounded education for them and all of the students in winthrop. With my experience in town government i will focus on keeping education in winthrop moving in a positive direction. I ask the voters of winthrop to cast one of their three votes for school committee for ron vecchia.”

Ron is a product of the winthrop school system, a home owner, a vietnam veteran, a justice of the peace, is a life member of the winthrop lodge of elks and serves on the board of directors of wcat.
