Deadline Approaches for Election Filings

Candidates for several offices in Winthrop have until Sept. 8 to turn in their nomination papers for the Nov. 3 election.

Town Clerk Carla Vitale said now every open seat has at least one person running for it.

So far two candidates, Robert Driscoll and Craig Mael, are running for the position of Town Council president. The current Town Council president Peter Gill is not seeking re-election. There are town councilor races in Precincts 2, 4 and 6. In the race for for Housing Authority are newcomer Matt Callis, incumbent Frank Ferrara, Jeanne Maggio and Nicole Anzuoni.

For councilor at large, John Dorso is challenging incumbent Philip Boncore. There are three seats open for Library Trustees. The only incumbent to pull papers is Ron Bergman. Also running are Stephen Hines and Thomas Connolly.

Running for Precinct 2 Councilor are: Mike Bertino, Lisa Howard, and incumbent James Letterie.

Running for Precinct 4 are: Heather Engman, a member of the Board of Health and Paul Caruccio. Running for Precinct 6 is incumbent Linda Calla

Running for School Committee are: Jared Wickham, Rob O’Dwyer, Ron Vecchia, Todd Sacco and Lisa Howard.

It does not look like School Committee member Gary Skomro will seek re-election. Fellow committee members Melissa Polino or Maryalice Sharkey have not taken out nomination papers yet.

Candidates have been able to pull nomination papers from the town clerk’s since June 1. The papers are due back to the office by Sept. 8 at  4:30 pm. Precinct candidates need 50 signatures from registered voters in their precinct. Town-wide candidates need at least 150 signatures from registered voters town-wide. The election takes places on Nov. 3.
