We first knew Dave Guffey as a rugged football lineman and accomplished track and field athlete for Winthrop High, but it is in the sport of softball where Dave is making his most significant impact as a coach. Once again Dave’s Lady Vikings are making a run in the State Tournament and they could be on a collision course with their perennial nemesis, powerful St. Mary’s of Lynn. Ignacio Oyola’s girls basketball team defeated St. Mary’s on its way to the TD Garden and perhaps Guffey’s group can overtake St. Mary’s if it gets the opportunity in the Division 3 North Sectional final Sunday.
But the fact of the matter is that Dave has been a giant in the Winthrop softball program, helping many athletes improve their overall ability and develop a love of the game, with many moving on to play at the college level. There have been many softball players who contact Dave for pitching lessons on a paid professional basis and his record of helping those students advance their skills on the mound is flawless.
We’re fortunate, as are all of the softball players in Winthrop, to have Dave Guffey at the helm of the high school program. His annual “Battle of the Beach” summer softball tournament is an affirmation of the esteem in which he is held by high school, AAU, and youth coaches throughout Massachusetts and in other states as well.
