WINTHROP – There’s always a perk when you go to a Massachusetts Water Resources Authority Forum. Sometimes its cookies and juice, but this time it was water bottles and fertilizer.
The MWRA has been making it
s own fertilizer since the mid-1990s from the sludge byproduct that comes from cleaning the sewerage that passes through the Deer Island facility. Known as Bay State Fertilizer, it is a 4-3-0 slow release formula organic nitrogen fertilizer. It is made by rotating the sludge under high temperature dryers. This produces a small, hard, granule that is 60 percent organic material. The pellets contain nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, sulfer and iron.
According to the MWRA, golf courses, landscapers and municipalities have used it on parks and athletic fields since 1995. The public can purchase a bag of the fertilizer for $3.50 a bag at the MWRA facility or it can be purchased for $175 a ton (bring your own truck).
